Need to know about cat in remission

Hi,

I wonder if anyone would mind telling me if a cat in remission isn't diabetic while they're in remission and that a 24 hour cortisone injection wouldn't hurt him? It's what my vet told me this week when I took him to see her.


I thought that even in remission (as my cat is at the moment) that a cat is still diabetic. I didn't let her give the shot but he's got to go in on Monday for the day and I would be grateful for someone to tell me if she's right or not. Thanks very much.
 
A cat in remission is a diet controlled diabetic, so yes, still diabetic. And we've seen cats fall out of remission with a steroid shot, though one I'm thinking off got back into remission once the steroid wore off and the caregiver was aggressive with getting him regulated again with insulin. Might want to ask the vet how long it lasts in the body.

What is the reason for the steroid injection?

There really wasn't any need for the injection. His behind was a bit sore because he has trouble passing a poo sometimes but I give him laxatone and it stops him being constipated. She sprayed something on his rear end instead and it cleared it up in a couple of days.

I'm dreading taking him in on Monday in case she decides to give him a cortisone shot. I trust her for everything else, but not so much with diabetes. Anyway, fingers crossed and thanks again.
 
A vet I saw once, said one could consider a steroid shot for the inflammation of the gut, also in for constipation, but he personally thought it was used way too often and for silly unnecessary reasons. I told him no thank you, I already had one diabetic and didn't need another and he agreed..
So I definitely won't ever use it, unless it's a life or death situation, or necessary for quality of life, and only if there were no other options.
But it's clearly the easiest way to go, not considering the side-effects...
Why does she need a whole day with him?
 
She has felt a hard mass in his stomach which she is almost certain is cancer but she won't know until she opens him up. I can't tell you how much I am dreading this. He's got to be starved from 7.00 the night before then handed over to the vet (which terrifies him) and I wonder if the stress alone might take him out of remission and I am paranoid that she might give him a steroid shot anyway.I told her he was diabetic the other day and couldn't have a steroid shot but she said he wasn't diabetic because he is in remission. (He didn't get the shot) Wish I could cancel the whole thing but I can't carry on not knowing if he's got cancer or not. He can't stay on painkillers for ever.

Cant the vet do an ultrasound instead of surgery at this stage?.
I have told my vet I don’t want any of my cats to have steroids unless it is life threatening.
I am surprised the vet doesn’t k ow your kitty is still a diet controlled diabetic.

She's x-rayed him and said she would have to open him up because of where the mass is and she'll send a biopsy off for analysis. She's almost sure of what it is but I don't know what to think because he certainly has off days but he's as bright as a button lately and he's not losing weight so I do wonder if it's cancer. Just hope that it doesn't take him out of remission to have this operation.

I don't know where she gets the idea that a cat in remission is no longer diabetic. I like her a lot but she won't be told anything because she's a vet and I'm not, but some of the French are a bit like that.

Just to let you know that William has been to the vet and it's a bit uncertain what he's got at the moment. The vet found his spleen and pancreas are enlarged by whatever it is he's got (a big mass) and there's something like an oedema in his pancreas but it might be treatable according to what they find from doing the biopsies. She took a nodule off of his spleen. His liver and kidneys are fine though and his his BG seems to have returned to normal so I've just go to wait and see.

He's slept all day today but eats well, so I'm not writing him off yet!
 
Hi Diane,

Just wanted to tell you that William is back home and apart from feeling sore and wanting to go out (which he can't yet!) he looks okay. The vet has sent bits of the mass off for biopsies so will just have to wait for the results now. So, fingers crossed again. :nailbiting:
 
Keeping all our fingers, toes and paws crossed on the results. :bighug::bighug: If pred is part of the picture to help him bet better, then so be it. You just give insulin to balance it out.
 
Sorry to ask but what is pred? I logged in to ask about his BG numbers going so high and saw your message and thank you very much for it. He's just had an operation so do you think that could be the reason why he's going so high? His numbers started going up a few days before he went in. Also, if he's got to go back on insulin, would you tell me how much to give him? He still seems to be in pain at the moment (although he wants to go out and he's eating well) so I wonder if that's a contribution. I've phoned the vet to ask to change his painkiller and I'm waiting for her to ring back.

It looks to me as if he's gone out of remission but I'd be really grateful if you could give me your opinion.

Sorry, short form for prednisolone. A steroid commonly given. Similar to what the shot is.

I see he's down to green again today. Pain can cause an increase in the numbers. I hope you get something to give him relief.
