This is for a newly diagnosed diabetic youngish male cat, Boots. He had been losing fur for a while, polyuria, polydipsia got him to the vet and a full blood panel, suspecting thyroid or diabetes. Blood sugar on the panel (results took about a week to get) was 500. I had already talked to Boot's Cat Daddy about the importance of diet change and of hometesting, and he knew my Charlie Bloo Eyes story.
This vet, their regular one, put Boots on 2u PZI BID, did not mention diet at all, he was on a dry Hills prescription diet for the hair loss assuming it was allergic. This was done on the basis of ONE blood glucose test done as part of a panel. No kind of curve was even suggested, just to bring the cat in for a BG Oct 11. The owners asked about home testing, they knew that I had done it with Charlie, and the vet answered by telling them the meters didn't work and it was a sales scam (???). I had already told them about low carb wet food and owners changed the food to wet <6% carbs from the list but were going to be gone over the weekend (a planned trip involving airfare, couldn't be helped) so opted to wait until Monday Oct 1 to start insulin, not ideal but at least safe. I actually suggested they start lower on the insulin with the food change when they did start it and post here to look for a vet in the DC area who will support them with home testing and hopefully, Lantis.
So, we would so appreciate if someone knows of a vet in the DC area who doesn't think hometesting is a salesman's money making scam could let us know so Cat Daddy won't have to call every vet in the area to find one who doesn't think hometesting is a scam to sell meters.
On a darker note, if anyone remembers my Charlie Bloo Eyes, he had a great almost three years honeymoon, never needed to go back on da juice, but passed away from a non diabetes related illness (metastatic carcinoma) July 8. He is sorely and sadly missed, but he was old and his time had just come, by the time we knew there was anything wrong the tumor was in his bones.
Meanwhile Boots' Daddy is having some kind of email confirmation problem preventing him from registering so I am posting to see if anyone knows or knows of a vet in the metro Washington DC area who will support Boots and his Mommy and Daddy in hometesting. Personally, I am seriously concerned about the PZI dose being given blindly, no test except one random AT ALL and no recheck until Oct 11
