? Need some insight on bouncing and dosing

Hello everyone,

My Mimo seems to be bouncing really hard in the past few days and i don't know why. I changed his dose last Tuesday to 1u twice a day and for the first days he responded quite well. However, during the weekend he bounced, recovered on Monday and this morning seems to be bouncing again and I don't know what to do.

I am planning to increase his dose to 2u tonight because I can't do fine doses (i am using the Lantus pen and could NOT find any 30 or 31G syringes with needles smaller than those for humans). He has also been on 2u twice a day before and did fine except for a skyrocketing bounce of >600 that happened once.

I am a bit desperate and super worried that I can't regulate him at all and I really don't know what to do with his constant bouncing or who to turn to because my vet told me to give him 3u twice a day last time I talked to him.

Bouncing occurs for a few reasons.. and it is perfectly normal especially in a newly diagnosed cat, so try not to stress about it too much. It can be frustrating I know.
Cats will bounce if they drop lower than they are used to (if they have been in higher numbers for a while). Their bodies think they have to save themselves and they release hormones and glucose into the system which can send their BSL sky high.
They can also bounce if they drop too low or too fast. Bounces can last for up to 6 cycles.

MIMO is still at the early stages of feline diabetes. Don't lose heart. It takes a while to get it all sorted. Don't give 3 units as your vet advised. Just go up gradually in 0.25 increments and you will get there

The insulin syringes we use are ones that are used for humans too. I used to buy mine from the local chemist., so you should be able to find some. Much better to go up in 0.25unit increments than 1 unit increments. Below are a couple of examples of suitable syringes. Bron

The ReliOn syringe has a better length needle 6mm than the BD. the BD has an 8 mm one which would be better than the 12 mm

I agree with Bron. My Ravan has diabetes for 9 months now & he still bounces. He just went from 180 to 60 in 2 hours. It's not always easy to get kitty regulated. It takes time,a lot of time for some kitties.
Are you still feeding dry food? One of the Yellow sticky notes is by Dr. Pierson She explains why it's important to get your cat off all dry food. Some kitties have gone into remission when they were switched to only Low carb canned food
Many vets are not familiar with how Lantus Insulin works. Your vet started off with too much insulin. And with Lantus the increases are gradual .25 at a time,like Bron said. 12 hrs apart at the same time each day.
It's Great that you have a spread sheet set up already! And that you're testing at different times of the day & night. The more data you have the easier it will be for people to advise you on the correct dose.

I don't give dosing advice I leave that to the experts here that have a LOT of experience. You might want to post i.e. date -kitties name-? Dosing advice needed Someone will get back to you to help.
Get the syringes with 1/2 unit marks. It will make it easier to give the correct dose.

There is a LOT of information here to read. You need pick the method you want to use TR or SLGS . Add more info to your Profile page How old is Mimo? What does he weigh, Does he have any Health problems, what does he eat. Where are you located (Time zone) & what time do you give insulin?

I know it feels overwhelming in the beginning! Take a few deep breaths,read as much as you can so you understand how Lantus insulin works and most of all TRUST the advice you get from the people here.
