Hi everyone, i don't want to bore everyone with a long story but our beloved Binky got very sick again on Thanksgiving, he was throwing up and not eating. This has happen 3 times this year but this time Binky seems to be in a lot of pain. The vet just keeps telling us Binkys white blood cell count is high and gives him antibiotics. Anyway they are very busy there, they gave me chewable dog 125mg of Clavamox twice a day our Binky is 16 pounds, my question is has anyone here given their cat that dose? i am so stressed over Binky i can't close my eyes to sleep.

I'd suggest getting Binky checked over by a vet - possibly a different vet - and also tested for pancreatitis as soon as possible. Assuming Binky's diabetic (not obvious from your post), if you're not already doing so, check for ketones. Another common thing to check for is constipation/GI obstruction because they too can cause vomiting and GI discomfort. [NB: This is not an exhaustive list, just some 'common culprits'.]

Can't be more specific other than that my 10lb civvie, Lúnasa, was recently prescribed 62.5mg twice a day of an equivalent antibiotic (Kesium, a different brand of co-amoxyclav).

Pulled this from a website when I went to check dosage. I'm personally not familiar with the tablet form but have use liquid, I believe I use roughly the same recommended amount of 1mL/10lb twice daily most of the time.

DOSAGE FOR CLAVAMOX
Clavamox for dogs and cats comes in tablet form with various strengths of 62.5 to 400 mg, and a 50 mg/ml liquid oral suspension. The ideal dosage is 6.25 mg/lb (1 mL/10 lb) of body weight twice a day. Skin and soft-tissue infections should be treated for 5 to 7 day. If animals fail to respond to the treatment even after 3 days of treatment, stop the therapy and consult a veterinarian. Though some conditions like urinary infections may require longer treatment schedules, make sure that the treatment does not exceed 30 days.

This does sound like it could be a pancreatitis flare-up. Have them do a SNAP fPL and get some cerenia. You can also give ondanestron/zofran at 2mg every 12 hours to help with nausea but I do not know if it can be taken with Clavamox or not.

They can be used in parallel (only way that I could get Lúnasa to eat at all during her recent course was with the ondansetron). Co-amoxyclav preparations can play absolute havoc with the digestive system.

I can relate. Lola just finished course of Clavamox (62.5mg twice daily - she's ~12 lbs) prescribed for a UTI, and it was an absolute nightmare.

Even with ondasetron and omeprazole she would not eat and had to be syringe-fed each meal. Getting enough food into her, and keeping it down, became my primary focus for the entire time. We only made it 12 days of the prescribed 14 before calling it quits. (She started pulling her fur out and is now bald on her belly, the insides of all four legs, and was starting on the outside of her legs. It turns out that "itchiness" is a sign of an allergy to the drug.)

The good news is that her UTI has cleared and her appetite has returned, but we'll never go down that road again.

Hi Enid,

The good news is that her UTI has cleared and her appetite has returned, but we'll never go down that road again.
So sorry to hear Lola had an even worse time of it than Lúnasa. Very glad that the UTI was cleared by the treatment. It would have added insult to injury if it had still been present after all that misery.

(((Lola)))
