I think this should be mandatory reading for all vets and we should be able to highlight the areas that we want them to memorize. I especially love these statements:

Home monitoring is imperative for all diabetic cats.

Fructosamine levels are a helpful tool to monitor diabetic cats,
but clinical signs, physical examination findings, and results of home monitoring
should be considered when evaluating the efficacy of insulin therapy.

Hi,
For me, home monitoring is really secondary to the primary goal of maintaining euglycemia. The goal of treatment is euglycemia, and at the current time, home monitoring appears the only practical way to achieve this. An alternative approach to encouraging or insisting on home monitoring is to insist on normoglycemia. Not only will that result in home monitoring, but it could very well result in better advice and treatment particularly if you can point the vet in the right direction :-)

Awesome article, have forwarded it!

A couple of observations though...

Says lantus typically peaks at 16 hours and is good for 24 hours
Doesn't list Levemir as an option

But overall, such an improvement!
