Hey all,
Some of you know I have been trying to find a good dose for Beau for the past 2 weeks and nothing seems to be working.
He was doing quite well on 1.5 in the beginning when we dropped his dose down to 1.0 after a BG curve at the vet showed quite a low nadir given the stress factor. He then had a near hypo on 1.0 on the 3rd cycle so I dropped him further down to 0.8. But 0.8 did not give green nadirs (except one time when I shot into a dropping PS#) and we started getting red PS#'s. At this point I struggled with dose adjustment not knowing whether his #’s are due to not enough insulin or too much giving us rebounds and some flat #'s.
Seeing that he did well on a higher dose I increased his dose back to 1.0 for 6 cycles, still no green nadirs and PS#'s in the reds and blacks. Then up to 1.2 for 6 cycles, we got a few green nadirs but also some big swings in PS#'s (everything from blue to black). Because Beau can go low the fear of rebound came into my head again so I dropped the dose back down to 0.8 for about 7 cycles. It appears 0.8 is not giving him a good enough drop or long enough duration so I increased his dose back to 1.0 last night.
This morning the alarm didn’t go off so I overslept and he got his AM shot 2 hours late. We didn’t get much of a curve today and he’s already at 538 at +9. I want to give his shot at +10 if possible since his BG is already so high and want to know if I need to hold the 1.0 dose for a few more cycles or if I can bump up the dose to 1.2 tonight?
Looking back he seems to do well on 1.25-1.5 and I’m wondering if perhaps we decreased his dose too soon? As I study his curves to see what worked and what didn’t, it seems the few times when he dropped too fast too low is when I shot a full dose either at a dropping/flat PS# or at a lower-than-normal PS#. I am thinking maybe I should get him back on 1.25-1.5 and adjust the dose a bit if his PS# calls for a reduced dose as I don’t like how he is spending most of his days in the 300-400’s which must not be good for his body.
I would really appreciate any feedback and comment if someone has time to take a look at his recent SS. Thanks!
