Need Immediate advice for new cat Risky!

Okay, guys Martha and I need your help.

Here is what is going on....I went over today to test Risky and show Martha how to test. I tested Risky at +6 and he was 505. We waited and retested around +7, just to see where he was--he test 545. He had been receiving 8 units of Prozinc, but this morning she cut his dose back to 7 Units. He is not very fond of the canned food--he only really likes tuna and science diet dry. But, since I left he has had no dry food and only a little bit of tuna mixed with Low Carb Fancy Feast--he normally grazes on dry all day. She tested Risky again at +9 (I think) and he was 345...ummmmm...she just tested him to give his pm shot and he was 298. Obviously, the dry food is the culprit here--and she knows he does not need 7 units tonight. She is feeding him some tuna and FF now and trying to leave the dry out and is going to test again in three hours. How much insulin do you think she should reduce too?

She tested for Ketones and they were negative and she is willing to test tonight during the night if necessary to be sure he is safe.

This is the lowest two tests she has had since he was dx. all of the other test have been done at the vet's office. She said he is already acting more alert tonight.

ETA---He was 457 not 345 at +9! She said the vet said he normally would not even register.

So, we need your help....how much insulin?
 
Ok my gut says that his body is already reacting to the dose reduction,
honestly I knda like Sue's idea last night...reduce to 4 units..if his body reacts to reducing by one unit
he will most likely react a lot to another 3 unit reduction and we dont want anything too dramatic(my opinion
from Sue's idea)
and if he is still eating the dry food I wouldnt think you would want to reduce to one or two units.

uggg. we have everything crossed over here, please let us know what happens

She has taken the dry up and is trying not to feed it tonight...if there is no dry don't you think 4 units would be too much?
 
Seriously, I would go with no more than 1u tonight. He's already dramatically lower than ever before. Even if the one unit doesn't help much at all, it isn't going to make him zoom higher than he's been before. I recommend cutting way back until we know how much the low carb wet is going to drop him on his own.

I am feeling the same way about there being no fear in if he goes high.. I have to imagine that the high numbers have not only been the dry food, but his liver dumping also to protect against the massive insulin. It will be interesting to see where he is in 3 more hours....if he is any lower or even flat, I might would skip insulin until the morning--maybe 6am-- and see what his body did. It would be like starting over with a clean slate. Then if he was in the 300 range I would start at 1 unit. She knows ketones are negative.

well, last night I suggested no insulin for two or three days, change him to low-carb canned, test and see from that point on what to do with doses. I didn't know then that he was a no-canned-food kinda guy though.

I think I agree with Kim,
(that has to be a first!!)
Skip the shot tonight and start over tomorrow and I think I would start at the normal, with no dry, 1u. It would be interesting to see how his body reacts to no insulin tonight .... I would go farther and say unless he is HIGH to still start over with 1u .... it can ALWAYS be raised but if Martha is testing .... and no ketones! we have wiggle room!

And the great news is .... he is already acting better!!
 
Okay, I just talked to Martha and the wet food is not working tonight! We know he needs to eat, so she is going to test him and then feed him some of his dry. She will then retest in an hour--expecting the test to be higher due to the carbs and then hopefully we (all of you!) can decide a dose for the night.

This will be interesting to see how high the dry runs him up in an hour. At the least, it will be good information for Martha to have. It will also allow her to see the effects of the dry on his bg.

She will post his readings.

To any of you that are going to be around, please keep an eye out for her post so we can help her tonight.

Can we all agree that 7 or 8 is too much?
No matter what he climbs to after the dry, I would still go low. Eventually, he will get on the wet food bandwagon, and when he does, he's going to need a lower dose, right?
Assume like Kim said (i think it was Kim) that not only is the dry food causing high BG, but his liver must be the most sugar producing liver ever with 8 units BID going on lately.

I know I'll be in dream land in an hour so I won't be around to advise (did i mention that I hate the 5:30am-2pm shift????). I'll submit an early absentee ballot and say no more than 2 units.

I agree that 7 units is too much and that he probably needs 1 t o 2 units....No more than 2

I can easily be in the skip the shot camp with no ketones.

Would you start back tomorrow with one unit?
 
Can we vote twice? why not? I'm still in the skip the shot tonight and start over at 1-2u in the AM. No ketones give us a little space .....
