Scarlet was just dx'd with diabetes. She is 16. She has IBD (irritable bowel disease). As such, she must have hydrolyzed food. She has been on Hills k/d for several years. It is too high in carbs. I need to find a lower carb hydrolyzed wet food. I need a recommendation or someplace to do more research.

I'm not sure I can handle doing my own raw "make your own" food. Kinda overwhelming.

She also has over-active thyroid & gets a transdermal in her ears for that issue. This may prevent testing. I haven't figured that out yet.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi and welcome to you both
There are lots of raw foods you can buy now, depending on where you live. What country are you in?
Have you joined the IBD Facebook page?
Just keep the thyroid cream away from the area where you will be testing..I don’t think that should be an issue…can be worked around.
You test around the edge of the ear.

Hi Bonny, there are lots of kitties here with both diabetes and IBD. Both Bron and I are big supporters of raw feeding to manage both issues. Hydrolyzed foods are fine if you are knowledgeable about using insulin and know how to dose it to counteract the high carbs in hydrolyzed food, but in the meantime have you tried feeding novel proteins, i.e. ones that are not prevalent in cat foods like venison, bison, or duck?

I wrote a bit about feeding raw to diabetic cats with CKD and gut issues like IBD and small cell lymphoma that may be helpful to you, especially if you live in the US: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/raw-feeding-senior-kitties.248460/

In addition to the Raw Feeding for IBD Cats FB group that Bron mentioned, there is also a website that is a wealth of good information, run by the same people who started the FB group: https://www.rawfeedingforibdcats.org/start-here.html

Like Katherine, I have an IBD kitty. I feed a combination of raw and novel protein canned food. I use a pre-mix with the raw food. The pre-mix is a powder that contains all of the supplements to make the raw food nutritionally complete. I use a product called EZ Complete from FoodFurLife -- it's mentioned on the webpage that Katherine linked. I use ZiwiPeak venison and rabbit and lamb for the canned food.

Scarlet has the scar/thick intestinal walls which requires the hydrolyzed food. We tried the novel meats like duck & rabbit but they just don't get absorbed. Years back, I joined the IBD group & did alot of research abt the IBD. Her brother died of IBD 3 years ago.

I'm in the Phoenix area. I'm not sure radically changing out her diet to raw will work. She is a very picky eater. However, there seems to be a lot more options to choose from with regards to feeding raw & novel protiens than years ago. So, I'll be digging in more.

Have you had any luck finding a hydrolyzed canned food that isn't high carb? I'm in the same boat -- diabetic kitty with IBD, so I'd love to know if such a thing exists. She did OK on novel protein for a while, but she's started losing weight, so I don't think she's absorbing it anymore. The vet convinced me to try Hills z/d even though it's 35% carbs, and it seems like it's a no go. Her blood sugar went from 90 to 200 after her first bowl of it, which is the highest number I've seen in the 2.5 years since she went off insulin.
