Patches is not eating at all and I have to rely on syringe feeding. Is it ok to give Patches Clinicare? Is it ok to give Max Cat syringe food? I heard they were higher calorie items but not sure if they are ok for diabetics. I know I can't give Nutrical!!!

HELP :'(

did you ask your vet what to feed? does your cat have pancreatitis? why is he not eating? I don't know anything about clinicare or max cat so I'll let others answer. how long since Patches has eaten?

Hi, has he eaten yet? If not since when has he not had any food?

I'm not familiar with Max Cat, but what do you usually feed him?

If it is a pathe you could just add a little bit of water to it and put it in the syringe and feed it to him or get some of the FF pathes

One more thing you can do if the food doesn't go through the syringe well is take a normal 5ml syringe, discard the needle, cut the tip off and with a nail file polish the borders so that it doesn't have a shap edge or something that may hurt him and this way you have a syringe with a big hole in it that is easier to use with other types of food

i am syringe feeding her as much as she will keep in her without spitting it out. she is getting 150-200 fluids daily. she hasn't ate on her own in about 5 days. she is drinking and peeing on her own. i just got a blender and she gets pepcid twice a day and then i wait an hour and syringe feed her. I am going to blend up some friskies with extra water and see if i can get that down her. She also seems to have gotten a cold with nose congestion and dripping. Can i give her 1/2 claritin????

My hubby said he thinks we should let her go!!! It breaks his heart to see her giving up. I don't know. I don't think I am quite there yet. I thou;'ght about it last Friday, but I was glad I didn't. I don't know. I9 called vet and asked about putting in a temp feeding tube..

I would recommend you feed her little amounts (about 2ml in the syringe) about every 2 hours that helps them not feel nauseated and one hour after the food you give her some water (also about 2ml)

That way she gets food and water every two hours alternating them

she was diagnosed with diabetes. she was 624 at vet and he started her at 2u twice a day. this is what i have

Don't give a claritin

Ask about getting an antibiotic and try steaming up the bathroom for her for the nasal congestion. She probably picked up the cold at the vet. 200 ml of fluids daily is a LOT. The rule of thumb is 10 ml per lb. So if she's a 10 lb cat she should get 100. How much does she weigh? Over hydration can cause fluid to collect and cause heart failure.

[QUOTE="ceil99, post: 1969913, member: 361" She also seems to have gotten a cold with nose congestion and dripping. Can i give her 1/2 claritin????[/QUOTE]

Don't know about claritin I think that's an allergy med and if she has a cold with her not eating she probably needs antibiotics

Has she been tested for ketones?

Do you know if she has temperature?

she did not have a temp. her urine was clear. she weighed 15 at last check. how will the antibiotics stay down if she is not eating? i don't want them making her sick....or will the pepcid take care of that.....vet told me to give her 250, but i never gave her that much. i started at 200 and now cut it back to 150, so that should be good if she is 15 lbs. REMEMBER, she is not eating much of anything. that is probably the only thing sustaining her....:'(

I would suggest injected antibiotics

I think it's important to find what's wrong with her that is making her sick and not wanting to eat it could be a serious cold or even bronchitis or something with her stomach is her stomach blothed or something?

Cetones has she been tested?

What has the vet said?

Try baby food- chicken, fish, beef etc. many times after a taste they will lick it off a spoon themselves. Easy to digest and tastes good!
You can also mix it with a bit of warm water and syringe feed.

My hubby said he thinks we should let her go!!! It breaks his heart
It's gut wrenching force feeding but it did have a happy ending for me once. Noah's brother Andrew had a nick-name, Bright Eyes. He was at death's door and we made him all better. Option 2, the weekend is here. Don't get stuck in an emergency clinic at the end, it's awful. My bag of tricks; warming the food, let Patches sleep wherever she wants, sleep with her on the kitchen floor if you have to, don't let her crawl into a hole in the basement, Noah likes to have his tail pulled and a little back rub (he's old). The only heart that matters is Patches. Be kind to each other, Patches knows you love her.

If she's congested and can't smell her food she won't eat. Warm the food and stir it up good to get the max smell, and use the stinkiest food you have. Try the steam like Janet mentioned. I don't know about Claritin, but others here have given 1/4 Zyrtec for allergies. Not sure if that would help. Search for it on this forum to make sure of the dose if you decide to try it.

I don't know! I am getting discouraged. She is really fighting me on everything today. She was jerking away from the syringe feeding and spitting it out. She wouldn't sit still for the fluids, so I only got 100 in her today. She was 391 at 7am and she got her usual 2u. I spot tested her at 3:30 before the fluids and she was 334. I just got back from Petsmart with some Royal Canin RS (recovery food) - I was told it was good for syringe feeding and not high in carbs. I am going to try that after her 7pm shot. AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING? Is she fighting me because she wants to be let go..........or am I making too much of it? She just seems to want to be left alone and is fighting me on everything today. :'(

Have you tried feeding tuna with water? If she's drinking maybe tasting the tuna water will get her appetite going.
That and Hartz Delectable pouches got my cat eating when he had pancratitis.

If she's congested and can't smell her food she won't eat.
That's not an exaggeration, it doesn't matter what she sees, she HAS to smell it. She's fighting you because it's an unnatural act and who wants to eat when they're sick? Come on Patches! :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Can i give her 1/2 claritin????

Zyrtec or Chlortrimeton (Chlorpheniramine maleate) are both safe for cats....they can also act as an appetite stimulant

Have you tried putting her into a bathroom with hot water running? The steam can help clear up their nose and make breathing easier

If it's just clear "dripping" (not yellow or brown) it's probably viral or allergies and antibiotics won't help

vet gave me amoxi 50mg twice a day. told me to give her amoxi for a couple days. if congestion is not better, he gave me orbax to add to it once a day. I am so afraid it is going to upset her stomach!!! i don't want to take 1 step forward and then 3 steps back. It's a catch 22....trying to fix one thing messes up another. He said feeding tube is a possiblity next week if she doesn't get better

What's the vet's diagnose?

It's really important that she eats as soon as posible it really doesn't matter what (carbs aren't really important right now ) as long as she does, she is fighting you probably just because she is a cat and cats seriously do not like to be forced to do anything and it doesn't matter how they feel specially if they feel bad, try giving her just a little bit every time (she will forgive you for the abuse as soon as she feels better)

If she is not eating, you need to check for ketones, tonight if possible. You can buy ketone urine strips at any pharmacy by the diabetes supplies. Not eating + infection can lead to ketoacidosis that can be treated if caught early and is much less expensive if caught early.

Sorry, I know nothing of PZI, ketoacidosis. Not much help. Sincerely hoping things improve through the night. Our miracle cat is sleeping beside me right now, I'll try and send you some. Sleep near your baby tonight and I'll see you both in the morning. :bighug: :coffee:

Go to YouTube and search for music for healing cats. It may help relax her to help her heal.
