Hey all! My cat Willie is having skin issues and the vet suspects that food allergies may be the culprit... turkey in particular. I've been feeding him mostly raw turkey with feline instincts supplements. The vet would like me to do a restricted diet for 90 days in which I remove all poultry from his diet.

I've found a couple canned foods that should work for us (go! natural and wellness core), but I would very much like to keep him primarily on a raw and/or homemade cooked diet. My dad just hooked me up with over 40 lbs of venison (free, even!!), but I'm having trouble finding a supplement to use that doesn't contain chicken.

Back in the day, I would use Anitra Frazier's vitamineral mix recipe, but it contains wheat bran and possibly other carbs, so I'm not sure it's appropriate.

Any ideas?

Can you contact the makers of Anitra Frazier's vitamineral mix recipe? If you ask them for the calories from carb, % carb or grams carb and tell them why, they may help you out.

While Halo and (I think) Pet Guard make the vita-mineral mix for purchase, I generally just used the recipe from the book, which included:

1.5 cups of yeast powder (brewer's yeast seems to be best enjoyed by the cats)
1/4 cup kelp powder
1 cup lecithin granules
2 cups wheat bran
2 cups bone meal (or calcium lactate or calcium gluconate)

She recommends adding Add 1 teaspoon to each cat's meal for a total of 2 teaspoons a day.

She also recommends putting the following in the cat's food on a weekly basis:
-Vit E 400 units (alpha tocopherol, not mixed tocopherols)
-Vit A 10,000 units
-Vit D 400 units

It is the bran, in particular, that concerns me.

If you have a food scale, weigh the 1 tsp of bran alone.
then using the protein, fat, and carb values from this source:

bran nutrient info

plug in for the math part (see Binky's page)
_________________grams____cal/gm___calories______% cal
Protein___________9.0_____3.5_______31.50_______17.15%
Fat ______________2.5_____8.5_______21.25_______11.57%
Carbohydrate_____37.4_____3.5______130.90_______71.28%
Total____________58.0______________183.65

and do the math
weight of the teaspoon's worth of bran divided by 58 grams (in the 1 cup) to get how much you have.
ex
if 1 gram, then 1/58 = .017241 times 183.65 (the total calories in 58 gm) = 3.167 calories from carbs
if 2 gram, then 1/58 = .017241 times 183.65 (the total calories in 58 gm) = 6.343 calories from carbs

(I hope I did this correctly!!!)
