Hi!

Zoey is having an issue with petechiae patches on her belly. She doesn't have any symptoms of the usual causes of such things and they've ruled out tumors with an ultra sound yesterday. Vet feels it's an absorption/digestion issue and prescribed Pancreapowder to be added to her food. Last night was the first dose (1/2 tspn) and I will tell you that until I tested her BG at +4 and it was in the 300s, I felt good about her reactions: biscuit making and purring and content in ways she hadn't been in weeks. I'm fully expecting her to be in the upper 500s, if not HI, by the time her amps gets here in about an hour.

Google searches have led me to discover that the enzyme Amylase is to blame for this and it is indeed an ingredient in the script. Amylase is also something that Zoey's blood work tested super high on so she definitely does not need it.

Can anyone advise on what kind of enzyme additive would be better suited for a diabetic cat? I'm assuming there's something out there that doesn't have Amylase in it?

Thanks for any help you can offer. We greatly appreciate your time and involvement. :)

Amylase /ˈæmɪleɪz/ is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of starch into sugars. Thus, it is doing its job of producing sugar that then raises the BG.
When the pancreas is diseased or inflamed, amylase releases into the blood. A test can be done to measure the level of this enzyme in your blood.

I would discuss it with your vet or go to a specialist. You may just have to increase the insulin to

Thanks for the info, Larry. She has already had the blood work done and her amylase levels were in the red, high. She has been diagnosed with pancreatits and is doing well. The reason the vet prescribed the med was as something to throw at the petechiae because it's a mystery as to why it is there and only on the belly. He feels it is something to do with the way she's metabolizing the food and felt the enzymes couldn't hurt so try it and see.

I have read that there are enzyme additives that maybe do not have amylase as one of its ingredients. The vet consulted an internist but even he felt as if they had nothing to offer other than to say Zoey needed to lose weight. He doesn't really think it's a weight issue (although she does need to lose weight). We're on the third vet and most vets, this one included, are not accustomed to the level we monitor our cats' bg and the information we have. I was hoping someone here was using enzymes that were not making their cat's bg spike so I could point him in that direction. Like I said, we're just throwing stuff at the petechiae to see if it sticks and works at this point. It's the best and least expensive approach to eliminate possibilities. Zoey shows no alarming signs that indicate anything serious ... other than the petechiae.

It's a mystery.

Ah, I get it now, Larry. She NEEDS it or it would only be doing a portion of the job. Sorry so slow on the uptake but it eventually sinks in. I've removed the ? and will see if it levels out and then adjust accordingly.

Thanks again!
