Need help with Arthritis

My cat Shelby has arthritis in his right front upper part of leg and is getting worse. He has been on Dasuquin since August now and the last 2 weeks he is getting worse about getting up and down and even walking around. I have seen posts on Adequan and have called my vet regarding this. Can anyone give me more information on this and how many times you inject it? I am trying to get her to call in me a prescription.

I can clearly tell Shelby is in pain today with it.

There appear to be different protocols on the Adequan though all involve weekly shots in the first 4-6 weeks and then monthly, bi-monthly or tri-monthly maintenance shots thereafter. It's dosed on weight and can be given with an insulin syringe (though I caution anyone with a diabetic to keep adequan and its syringes in a completely different room and administer in a completely different room than insulin. They look similar and in a distracted moment you could cause a bad accident.) My vet advised 2 shots a week the first 4-6 weeks and every three months after. We only just started and Pearl got sick (not on account of it at all) so everything got thrown out of whack, so I am not a testimonial BUT I've heard of many people who have great success with it.

Maybe adding Adequan to your title might get more Adequan users to respond. I never went that route with my arthritic girl because my vet wouldn't prescribe it to be injected at home, they wanted to do the muscle injections there and my Taz is too much of a handful for vet appts for that kind of regimen. Dasequin did work well for us though, for as long as she was willing to eat it, which ended at about 2 weeks. We now use Synflex, a liquid/gel I just squirt in her mouth every other day.

HI Karen, my cat Sitka has been on Adequan 2-3 years and I swear its the only reason she can still walk. Its injected subq these days (early on they did the injection intra-muscle but have since found its just as effective subq). I would keep the bottle and syringes separate because they DO look alike. The protocol is 2 shots a week first 4 weeks then once a month maintenance. The least expensive adequan I've found was through Drs Foster and Smith - $54 dollars a bottle. Adequan doesn't require refrigeration and a bottle lasts a long time. Sitka is the queen of bad reactions cat and she's not had any problems with Adequan. Jan
