Need help on what to do about a missed shot

Somehow I missed the shot tonight. I always insert the needle then feel for the tip under the fur. Somehow though I came away with insulin on my left hand. I followed up with 0.25 units because I think I could safely be shooting that much higher as it is. (We're in the process of very slowly increasing the dose.) However, she's currently on 3.75 units Lantus, so 0.25 is hardly anything, and she can reach nearly 700 without insulin. So what should I do? Could I check at +4 and give some small amount more if she's over 400? If so, how much?

And how much is this going to mess things up generally? I know consistency is the key with Lantus.

The rule with fur shots is to not to give any more insulin until the next insulin shot time.

Some insulin may have gotten in but you have no way of knowing how much. You do not want to give any more insulin and risk a possible overdose, even if you give a fraction of a dose. You can do bg checks tonight but I would not give any more Lantus until tomorrow morning. It might take a cycle or two for your cat to get back on track but it'll be ok  Fur shots happen to everyone, even to experienced members.

You should not give more of the long acting insulin. In this case, since you were considering adding that much more but had not done so in the initial injection, it may be OK.

There is a Think Tank post about an idea on how to handle this situation; it is in the process of being discussed.
