Hello:

Last time I posted here was in the beginning of 2016 after my cat Stella had DKA and pancreatitis which seemed to have been caused by her undiagnosed diabetes. After a couple of months of Lantus, she went into remission and her diabetes has been controlled solely through diet (ie, she gets fed only Fancy Feast Classics wet food).

So recently I started noticing that Stella was excessively hungry and drinking a lot of water and I started getting nervous and brought her into the vet to get some labwork done. She hasn't had any vomiting or anything like that. They ran the Antech: Senior Profile labs with a urinalysis and here are the results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-cEYGY0TQiLb2zyX05arKyXgi9g-45V4uT5SSkfaTXY/

The vet called me after they got the results and was not very helpful other than making it seem like Stella was going to die shortly due to kidney disease. I tried asking the vet what stage Stella was in and first the vet said Stage 4 and then later changed it to Stage 2 so I'm not really sure at all what to think. The vet was also not worried at all about Stella's glucose level (though it is a little high) because the vet thinks the higher level was due to stress (Stella was on gabapentin before we got to the vet's office and then they had to sedate her two separate times before they were able to draw blood and urine). It also seems like these lab results suggest that Stella has pancreatitis again too due to the high PrecisionPSL number, but the vet didn't mention anything about that at all.

So I guess I would just like any help anyone can suggest re reading and interpreting Stella's latest lab results. I was thinking of taking Stella in to have her teeth cleaned as well but I don't know if I should do it or not now due to these lab results. I also was curious if my best course of action would be simply to switch Stella's food to something with less phosphorus than Fancy Feast Classics (vet recommended that I switch to Hills K/D which I immediately told them that I was not going to do because I knew that one was high in carbs). I'm not sure what food to switch Stella to since it has to be low carb and low phosphorus.

Any advice/help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

The fructosamine test is normal which would indicate that the raised BG at the vet could well have been from stress. Can you test again at home over a few days and see what the BG is.
FOOD CHART click this food chart to see low phosphorus options in low carb foods. Look for foods with phosphorus levels of 200mg/kcal or under. Stellas phosphorus levels are within normal limits but the FF are quite high in phosphorus so it would be wise to look for a lower phosphorus food. There are quite a few options to chose from.
@Marje and Gracie may also be able to help you with the lab results.

How is stella eating? There are two liver values that are above normal range but not that bad. They could be high due to DKA and pancreatitis. The urine specific gravity is a little low 1.022, a little low but not that bad. As long as eating goo I see no problem with a dental/anesthesia.

Way to early to start high carb renal food. For more information about kidney disease, what level she's at and feeding, this is a great website: http://www.felinecrf.org/ She is barely stage 2 CKD by that site, 1.6 is on the lower boundary of stage 2. Her phosphorus is a little high, you'd like it below 6. A lot of the Fancy Feast are pretty high in phosphorus. You might try to see if she'll like some of the lower P foods, Diane has a list of the safe lower P and lower carb ones. Then maybe get another blood test in 6 months.

Thank you for your replies - they have been very helpful. @Diane Tyler's Mom - appreciate the food list - I will definitely see if I can get Stella to switch. She loves her FF so it's going to be a hard sell but I am determined.
@Larry and Kitties - Stella has been eating a lot. She is actually always hungry (which was one of the reasons I took her to the vet to get her labs done). She wasn't due for her yearly bloodwork for another 3 months but I was nervous.
I will definitely try to change up her food - I had been looking at the felinecrf website but I was a bit confused about what the level of phosphorus was that I was supposed to be trying to get under. And you don't typically combine a phosphorus binder with low phosphorus food? I'm just trying to think of anything I can do to help Stella right now.

I would try a food change first to help the phosphorus. Often that’s all you need at first.
