Need help in dosing

It's been a struggle to get Olive's BG up since her insulin this morning. I'm just under two hours from when the PMPS should be given but she only reached 100 @ +9.75 We're using SLGS. She's very underweight and we switched her over to a raw diet days after diagnoses on 8-14 from a dry kibble diet containing 25% carbs, which she'd eaten for over 8 years. The raw diet only contains 0.04 carbs and the vet, and others have suggested that she needs more carbs in her diet and added calories. I need help in knowing what I should be doing. If any of you are familiar with a canned cat food called RAWZ, we have two different flavors on hand that we can offer her either in addition to her raw or by itself. If hubby's math is correct, the Turkey and Salmon would offer her 1/22 carbs for a day's serving and the Duck and Duck liver would offer 2.17. Other flavors contain more carbs, but I'm wondering if either of these would be a good starting place or if it's too little or too much carbs. Just need some help. If her BG doesn't rise in 1 1/2 hours then should I stall for an hour or two and see if it does or just skip tonight's dose of insulin? And if her BG does rise, how high does it need to go before I shoot? And what should be the IU I should give? She got 0.25 IU at the First cycle today.

OlivesMom mentioned today on her Health Thread that she is following SLGS.

I agree with a reduction.
I've looked at both spreadsheets. Tagging @Bandit's Mom to see if she can combine the two.

A bouncy kitty. The depot has never had a chance to build. I'd rather see it done going up the dosing scale rather than down.

105 +11
Yeah, I think we should change her name to "Yo-Yo!" lol. So at this point what should I do for tonight? She needs to eat in an hour. Should I offer the canned food? Stick to the raw? Or combine the two? There's no way she's getting insulin tonight, right?

Since she’s not getting insulin it will go up naturally so you can feed her whatever she wants. I’d stay clear of high carb though. You want to see what she will do with lc.

I just saw that the plan was to feed a little more carbs to see if she will stop tanking. Is important to link posts for continuity. You definitely can’t give her insulin when she’s dropped under 90. At most a drop. Not tonight though. Get more opinions.

What's classified as high carb? Like I said, the canned food we have is 1.22 carbs for the turkey and 2.17 for the duck. I guess for tonight I'll continue feeding the raw @ 0.04% carbs and see where her numbers are by morning. Do I need to test her through the night or should she be okay now until morning?

Sorry for the typo. From quickly reading your thread on main it was suggested you get some higher carb food to try. It sounds like you don’t have any. So feed her what you have.

Robyn, I totally understand your desire to feed a good quality raw diet. That’s what I feed my two young ones after having dealt with diabetes with Max. The problem is Olive is underweight. It’s making it hard for her to take insulin. What about making your own food? She would get the quality protein you want her to have. You can buy a vitamin supplement to mix in. Then you cat add cat friendly carbs. There are companies that will help you formulate a recipe. You can say you will cook the food because the ones I know won’t let you do it with raw. What do you think about that?

Great! I’ll get you the information. They won’t make a recipe for raw. You will need to gently cook it but there’s nothing wrong with that. Lisa Pierson approves. You can always go back to raw once she gains weight and gets regulated. That’s what’s important now.

I would be most grateful for the help. Thank you!! This sounds perfect for what we're wanting for her and I like the idea that later on once she gains weight and gets regulated that she can return to raw.

Hi @OlivesMom , I would need editing access to your spreadsheets to merge them. I will send you a PM with the details. :-)

Hi Robyn. As promised I am back with resources. Here’s a good place to start. I found one close to me that I might check out.

Thank you so much. I'll read through it all tonight when I have time to breathe. In the meantime I just picked up a few cans of Fancy Feast classic pate. I called a different vet and just enquired about carbs, ect. Of course that vet won't offer any advice whatsoever without seeing Olive, but the two techs did help. They agree that Olive needs to gain some weight and get some added carbs into her for the insulin to work effectively in her body and they know I'm not a fan of the Purina DM but said the Fancy Feast is totally similar to it in most every way but the cost. So until I can get what I need to make her meals, I'm going to switch to the FF instead of the raw just to begin boosting her up. Maybe give her a tsp or so of the raw as little tidbit snacks through the day just to keep the benefits of the raw going.

You can also give a little raw chicken thigh from the grocery store. I hope the change helps her. So often it’s trial and error.

I can pick that up tonight when hubby and I get some different flavors of the FF for her to try. I only had access to the salmon which she's not a huge fan of. So I need to travel a bit. It's difficult for me not to have solid answers for things as I'm the type person who needs to fix the problem NOW..or at least have the tools needed to do so. Olive is showing me that I'm going to have to change. I'm going to feed her whatever she'll eat today and I suppose I'll continue to do so until her weight improves to a more normal level.

I would love it if you would start a daily condo either on the Main or LL board. Put the date. Olive and AMPS # in the title. It will help us help you. I am glad that she likes the ff. Feed her eventually at least 3 cans a day spread out. I hope and pray you don’t see any tummy upset. Patience pants in ?

I can do that. I would love nothing more than to see her eat 3 cans in a day. For today, I'm just celebrating the HUGE victory that I've gotten her to eat 3/4 of a can of FF since +12 and it's +4 now. She's gone to the fridge and sat patiently waiting food 4 times today, which MOM was more than happy to supply.:)
