Need Help for neighbor

I found these boards a few years ago when my kitty Milo was diagnosed with diabetes. Thanks to all the assistance here I was able to follow and with a low carb diet Milo is insulin free OTJ for 4.5 years now.
Today my neighbor called and her baby was diagnosed this weekend with diabetes. I went over tonight and showed her how to give a shot (he is on 2 CC of ProZinc twice a day). I told her to put him on canned low carb and gave her link to this site and the low carb list. I also told her about testing her kitty at home. I took over one of my old meters to use (a Bayer contour) which takes a lot of blood- kitty was great about letting me test him but compared to Milo's freestyle light the Contour took so much blood. I know I was able to get a free one sent along with a rice sock from this site----I didn't even know where to look to start so I can direct her where to request one. I tried googling for a free one online and couldn't find any current---if anyone has a link that way that would work too. Also if we can find free online meter stupid question is how to make rice sock (I still use mine when I test Milo but I need to make a new one too).

Thanks again....I am forever grateful to this site and people and am going to be there for the new kitty who needs help (he was misdiagnosed for a long time but thankfully found a way to our vet and I know he is in good hands).
 
Not sure if there are any free meters available anymore. You might check the Supply Closet forum.

If you live in the US, the Wal-Mart Relion Confirm or Relion Micro takes a teeny 3 microliter drop of blood, about the size of the head of a pin.
Arkray is the manufacturer of these and the unbranded version is the Arkray Glucocard 01.

How to make a rice sock:
Take an old sock, thin if possible.
Add about 1-2 tablespoons of rice (or beans, lentils, what have you) in the toe portion.
Tip a knot in the top of the sock to hold in the rice.

I'm really not sure if there are free meters around since a lot of us have to keep them to keep an eye on our kitties.
I know it's not in a ton of places but there's a grocery store out here called Schnucks whose pharmacy offers free meters constantly but I couldn't tell you what brand.
If you can't find one for free I recommend hitting up a Walmart for a relion confirm meter they cost around $25 I believe and are definitely worth the price - reliable and don't need a lot of blood. Keeps kitty safe too to be able to test before shot and to see how it's doing.
Way to pass it forward on home testing and a low carb diet - my fingers are crossed!
