Can someone please calculate the carbs for a can of New Friskies Plus Classic Pate Homestyle Casserole? I assume it is probably chock-full of carbs (it could always go into the hypo kit) . I can't get the carb calculator to work. Here is the "guaranteed analysis" from the can:

crude protein 10%
crude fat 4%
crude fiber 1 %
moisture 78%
ash 3.5%
linoleic acid .9%
taurine .07%
vitamin e 25 IU/kg
zinc 60 ppm

Thanks Wendy!
Here's what it came up to. Which figure is the one we use (like in Dr. Lisa's chart) to determine if the food is LC, MC or HC?

Carbs 3.5%
Calories per 100g of nutrient =14
Calories per ounce of food = 26

yeah I think thats what the calories per 100g column is.. maybe send Sienne a message and see what she thinks.. not sure I am getting it right.

You can't calculate carbs off of the guaranteed analysis. You need the "as fed" values. You usually need to get that info from the manufacturer.

Ingredients:

Meat by-products, poultry by-products, water sufficient for processing, liver, fish, rice, corn oil, artificial and natural flavors, calcium phosphate, added color, guar gum, potassium chloride, salt, carrageenan, taurine, magnesium sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, choline chloride, ferrous sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, Vitamin A supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, biotin, folic acid, potassium iodide, Vitamin D-3 supplement. A-6181

My guesstimate from looking at the ingredients would be 8-14%. Keep in mind all the Friskies varieties have rice and are still around 8%.

According to my cat food values calculator the calories from carbs (according to those figures) = 11.3%

Edited to add - just found a flaw in my spreadsheet - will have to recalucate all foods I've done so far - Aaarrrgghhh!

Anyway, amended calculation for the values you listed shows percentage of calories from carbs at 14.76%.... (same as Wendy worked out)

Thanks everyone. I am going to email Purina today and ask for the "as fed" values for all of the "New" Friskies Plus foods.

I agree. There are too many discrepancies with trying to calculate what a Guaranteed Analysis might really mean and even then, the calculations differ.

The calculator I use:
9 carbs
79 calories/100g
22 calories/1oz

Wendy's calculator:
10 carbs
86 calories/100g
24 calories/1oz

Call them and ask. If they refuse to give it, refuse to do business with them further. And tell us about it! Whatever happened to the old-fashioned boycott? Only way to get the pet food companies to change and start putting appropriate and worthwhile information on their cans is if enough customers complain and stop giving them money when they don't provide this information, no matter how amazing their product might allegedly be. *cough*Stella&Chewy's*cough*

Thanks Kay. I sent an email to them; I'll post if/when I hear back. If I don't receive a response in one week, I'll call there....

Here's a copy & paste of the email response I received from Purina this evening:

Thank you for contacting the Nestlé Purina PetCare Company. We always welcome questions and comments from our consumers.

So we can best assist you please provide us with the specific nutrients in our Purina(r) Friskies(r) Cat Food PLUS that you are requesting the as fed values.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Really?

What the heck?!? confused_cat

They didn't even answer your question! That is bizarre. I would reply back asking "isn't that your job to provide me with the specific as fed values?"

I went to the Friskies website and found the "guaranteed analysis" and & "ingredients" and simply copied/pasted it and sent it as a response to their email

I disagree; There are varieties that are much lower than 8% according to Dr. Lisa's charts.

The regular Friskies Pates might be around 8%, but Friskies also has a "Special Diet" variety and most of those are lower at ~5% (this is the type I feed my cats). :-D They are hard to find, though. I only know of one store in my area that even carries them and they only have one variety (Turkey and Giblets) ever in stock.

I guess we're lucky here: I can easily find 3 of the Special Diet variety (Turkey and Giblets/Ocean Whitefish/Salmon). And the Kitten variety have 4-5%. The following regular pate variety, according to Dr. Lisa's charts, have 6 or under %: Chicken & Tuna Dinner, Flaked Tuna & Egg, Ocean Whitefish & Tuna, Salmon Dinner, Flaked with Tuna... Not too many choices, but inexpensive :-D

And FWIW I feed just the regular Friskies Pates to everyone and Maxwell is still in remission 2 years later and Autumn is doing great...The main menu is Turkey & Giblets, Poultry Platter, Country Style Dinner, Chicken & Liver and the I rotate for their fishy meal either Marnier's Catch, Sea Captian Choice, Salmon Dinner or Seafood Dinner depending on what is in stock at the time.
