Hello, folks!!!
I'm making the decision to get a Glucometer to check my kittie's blood sugars on

my own rather than relying on bringing him to the vet every 3-4 months. Does anyone have some good recommendations on where to buy a reliable & inexpensive Glucometer & strips???? I believe I had seen some thoughts on picking one up at Walmart but have no
idea what to look for. Suggestions??????
Also, my vet told me, if I decide to get my own Glucometer, for me to run it by their office
to have it calibrated with theirs for us to stay in better sync with testings. Do you all agree???
Meri

Hi Meri, most people use the Relion meters from Walmart but it depends on where you are located. In Canada we cant get the Relion meters & strips unless we either buy them online or take a trip across the border. @BJM I believe has some information about meters, just check out the signature line.

The Relion Confirm or Micro are both popular meters around here that a lot of us use. They take the tiniest sample and the strips are "affordable" at $35.88/100.....and having them available at WalMart is handy if you need strips at 3am on a Sunday morning too!

The meter itself is about $15

As for having your vet "calibrate" it, I wouldn't bother, but if you want to compare the results you get versus his "pet meter" you can. All the protocols we use here are based on human meter numbers, not pet meters, so we understand the test results well and when we give dose advice, we're most comfortable when you're using the human meter numbers

It will be important for you to start keeping track of your results on our spreadsheet. We'll always want to see it first before giving any advice and it's an excellent tool in our "diabetes toolbox"......because it's color coded, it helps us to look for "patterns" in the BG numbers instead of concentrating exclusively on the numbers. Here's some Instructions on setting up the FDMB spreadsheet ....if you have trouble, let us know though..we can help!

You've made the best choice possible in deciding to home test your kitty too! Home testing allows you to really know what's going on inside you sugarcat's body and helps to keep them safe as well as getting them as healthy as possible!

A an FYI: yes, there are pet meters. Those test strips run around $1 per strip.
If you only tested before each shot, that is $730 per year!
We recommend getting between-shot tests several times per week, for safety, so less expensive test strips let you do that without killing your budget.

I, too, Use the Walmart Relion monitor. Although it is calibrated for humans and not animals...I have found it to show a range of accuracy with which I am comfortable. Sugars of 50 to 120 with the Relion are fairly comfortable and safe. Even my vet found them to parallel the lab draws at the office (done with her annual check-up). Good luck from jane and stewey
