Need food recommendations for diabetic/renal failure

My cat Bug who is 16 ish has had diabetes for 2-3 years. I test him daily and give him Lantis. He also have hyperthyroid which I treat with tapazole.

I had another cat die last week - she was at least 17 - because she had hyperthyroid which we treated with tapazole and at the time, vet told me she had moderate renal failure and that treating the thryoid could make it get worse. Well it did and quick.

I wasn't worried about the Innove EVO cat and kitten dry food because she didn't eat it. She always waited for the wet food - Wellness chicken or turkey and sometimes Fancy Feast.

However, Bug always eats the dry food and I remember when doing research for switching his food because of diabetes that they said it has high phosphorus so not good for cats with renal issues. Binky's chart shows it at 396 phosphorus - crazy high compared to average of around 200 and renal diets are in the 100s.

Any suggestions on how to stay low carb, possibly even grain free, with low phosphorus and maybe even low sodium - oh and hope they will still eat it? I guess the Wellness doesn't look that bad, but just wondering if I can do better.
 
Hi there and sorry to hear about the loss of your cat.

My cat Spader had CRF and FD and I out together a list of links and wrote a little bit about food that I fed him and the other cats. I posted below and you can also find the links in my signature.

anything under 250 phosphorus should be ok to use.

if they will eat canned food - you could try the friskies special diet pate flavors - they are lower in phosphorus and diabetic friendly - not sure about the sodium though.

you could also look into raw food options if your cats will eat it.
 
EVO 95% Venison and 95% Beef are both low in phos, as is Wellness Turkey. I preferred these foods with Gabby because they didn't have any byproducts.
 
I tried to stay around 200 with the phos. I didn't really monitor the sodium levels. Wellness Chicken or Turkey, and some select flavors of FF were approved by me, then approved by the picky ones.

Are you using a phos binder? You might also consider contacting Dr Lisa to see if she's still doing phone consults. Cosmo had FD, pancreatitis, HL, and CRF, and I wanted an expert opinion on how to be low carb, low-ish fat, and low phos.

Is 200-250 the magic low-phos number? If so, that is fantastic news! Been looking for a post with a number and this is the first one I've found.

I think we may be entering the same boat. Crash is showing pre-CRF readings on his last blood test. Vet wanted to put him on KD, but the carb number is too high. I checked out Royal Canin Renal LP Modified, and it's a little higher carb, but I have been mixing with Wellness Chicken and Turkey flavors for a week. His sugar has gone from 65-105. Not happy with that, but figured I need to treat renal first. If 200-250 is okay, then back to Wellness with occasional Royal and hope his numbers will go back down.

I tried Evo 95%'s and he would not eat more than 1/2 can of them. Same with the raw - okay for a while, but then - no... Wellness and FF he loves, but FF seems pretty high phos, so no longer a viable option.
