Hi All!
My 13 1/2 year old cat, Max, was diagnosed with diabetes on March 15th. The vet put him on Purina D/M and 2 U of Lantus. All was well, Max was down to .5 or 1 U of Lantus when he stopped eating from a pancreatitis flare up. After two days at the vet with lots of fluids, Max was put back on his Royal Canin HP (dry) which we had used to control pancreatitis symptoms in the past. Low and behold, after a few days Max stopped eating again. Back to the vet where his blood glucose was back up to 450! My regular vet wasn't in and the on-call vet sent me home with all kinds of crazy meds (which I didn't give Max). After reading the recommendations to my previous posts, I switched Max to Fancy Feasts Elegant Medleys (chicken and turkey varieties) due to its lower fat content (fat seems to aggravate his pancreatitis) and (with the rec. from my "real" vet) downed his Lantus to .25 U. I also started home testing (but don't have a spreadsheet posted yet). His numbers have been good...in the 90 to 180 range throughout the day. My question is....is this the best diet (aside from raw) for a pancreatitis cat (possible IBD)? So far Max is doing O.K., likes his FF and eats it all, but I'm waiting on pins and needles for another attack. I've also noticed his stools are much darker, however, at the suggestion of my vet I checked the inside of the stool (O.K., that was gross) and it was brown. The dark stools also showed up when he had his first "diabetic pancreatitis" attack last week, but they were very dark all the way through (like Oreo cookie). I'm trying to avoid having him $scoped$ (he's already had all blood work done, plus an ultrasound). Does anyone have any diet advice or am I on the right track?
Thanks!
