Need diet for diabetic with pancreatitis issues.

Hi All!

My 13 1/2 year old cat, Max, was diagnosed with diabetes on March 15th. The vet put him on Purina D/M and 2 U of Lantus. All was well, Max was down to .5 or 1 U of Lantus when he stopped eating from a pancreatitis flare up. After two days at the vet with lots of fluids, Max was put back on his Royal Canin HP (dry) which we had used to control pancreatitis symptoms in the past. Low and behold, after a few days Max stopped eating again. Back to the vet where his blood glucose was back up to 450! My regular vet wasn't in and the on-call vet sent me home with all kinds of crazy meds (which I didn't give Max). After reading the recommendations to my previous posts, I switched Max to Fancy Feasts Elegant Medleys (chicken and turkey varieties) due to its lower fat content (fat seems to aggravate his pancreatitis) and (with the rec. from my "real" vet) downed his Lantus to .25 U. I also started home testing (but don't have a spreadsheet posted yet). His numbers have been good...in the 90 to 180 range throughout the day. My question is....is this the best diet (aside from raw) for a pancreatitis cat (possible IBD)? So far Max is doing O.K., likes his FF and eats it all, but I'm waiting on pins and needles for another attack. I've also noticed his stools are much darker, however, at the suggestion of my vet I checked the inside of the stool (O.K., that was gross) and it was brown. The dark stools also showed up when he had his first "diabetic pancreatitis" attack last week, but they were very dark all the way through (like Oreo cookie). I'm trying to avoid having him $scoped$ (he's already had all blood work done, plus an ultrasound). Does anyone have any diet advice or am I on the right track?

Thanks!
Heidi and Max

Re: How do I feed newly diagnosed diabetes and pancreatitis?

Heidi,

Most people here feed Fancy Feast Classic varietys for the diabetes. However if Max has pancreatitis getting him to eat anything is usually hard as most kitties lose their appetite. Dry food is never good though for the diabetic kitty unless its a very last resort and kitty won`t eat at all. Is Max eating ? If he is eating FF elegant medleys and BG is down I guess that would be alright, maybe some of the others will come along and weigh in.
With pancreatitis you have to keep them eating and watch that they are not vomiting. Pancreatitis can also be very painful in a cat. If he has another attack I would make sure you get him back to the vet especially if he stops eating that can be very dangerous.

HI Heidi, I'm replying to bump up your posting. I don't have any experience with pancreatitis but I think there is a couple of members here who do. Hope your kitty is feeling better soon. Jan

I suggest you change your Subject to ask about "Need diet for IBD diabetic with Pancreatitis issues"
I have no experience with IBD, but many others do.

If your cat won't eat the vet food, then take it back because you need to get your cat eating before Max gets really sick.
