I’m not sure why the appetite may be waning. Sometimes kitties need some extra coaxing, an appetite stimulant would definitely help if nothing else medically is going on. Does she have other medical issues aside from the FD?

@Chris & China (GA) any ideas about the low appetite after hypos?

Could you try to get a couple more BG readings in her AM cycle tomorrow? That will help in thinking through next steps.

She has no other issues. I will get one more reading tonight and 1 more in the morning before I leave for work.

Is that a good thing?
It is a VERY good thing if after eating her BG drops like that, means the pancreas is working! We want it to work, that’s what regulates blood sugar on her own.

If no other issues she may need help restarting on the food, remembering that food is a good thing. Maybe needs some extra attention while eating, and I personally always keep appetite stimulant on hand for if I need it. Your vet can get you some.

Great! Maybe tomorrow she will be back in her eating habits. I’ll get another reading tonight before I go to bed to make sure she is good. She is currently looking happy snuggled up against me now.

If she's not eating better tomorrow, call and see if your vet will prescribe an appetite stimulant for her. Mirataz is a topical that you apply to the ear, Mirtazapine is the same active ingredient as Mirataz, just in pill form and cyproheptadine is a human antihistamine (script required) that has the side effect of increasing appetite in cats.

The eating will help us know how well her pancreas is working and if she needs insulin help so it’s important from that perspective also. If you could get 2-3 tests tomorrow AM cycle that would be wonderful but don’t know what your schedule allows for.

Want to make sure you also see Chris’ reply above about the names of appetite stimulant to request.

Thank you I will call if her appetite isn’t back. I appreciate everyone’s advice. Thank you.

How is it going with Gracie’s eating today?

Could you start trying to get some BG tests in 3 hours after she eats a meal? I know you said she grazes, but lately not a lot of eating. I am figuring she will for sure eat at her AMPS and PMPS times right? We are trying to determine if/ how much her blood sugar goes down regularly after eating (which would be a great finding). Also on days she is not eating can you put it in notes column?

Hi! She is eating more today. She is back to her normal talkative ways, following me and my kids around. She is more awake today. I took a BG reading when I got home from work. She was at 172. Right after I took her reading she ate more food. I’ll take a reading after I feed her dinner.

So happy to hear of her improvement, Lauren!

Try to get a reading 3 hours after dinner. That's about the time it takes for the pancreas to kick in and lower that blood sugar if it's going to.

Also, what is your AM cycle schedule like? I assume you leave right after Gracie's breakfast? How long before PMPS time do you come home?

AM cycle is at 7am (central time) then she eats. Today I did PM at 4pm (central time) so today was 9 hours after first AM reading. She ate more of her breakfast after her PM reading.

I took a reading 3 hours after her dinner. Her BG was at 217. She did eat half the dinner of course after I took that reading. Thankfully that is the most she has eaten in a few days. Hopefully she finishes it overnight like she use to.

@SugarGracie How has Gracie been doing with the food Lauren? All ok still? Could you start checking urine with the Keto strips? Just to be safe!

For informational purposes: are you open to using a long acting insulin, Lantus, or a generic form of that insulin? It’s a human insulin but works super well with cats. It is a depot insulin which means it maintains even insulin levels in the blood over time. It’s gentle on a cats system. Vetsulin is dog insulin and it is harsh on a cat - hits them hard then fades out of system. More of a roller coaster. We don't recommend Vetsulin for cats (vets sell it though, because it is all they carry in a vet clinic - Lantus has to be purchased from a human pharmacy with script from vet).

I’m still hoping Gracie may still pop more into lower numbers on her own, but not sure if she will. If she ends up needing a teeeny dose (no advice on restarting this yet), she would fare better on Lantus (generic is Semglee). Lantus is also known for getting kitties into remission, and her insulin need - if any - is so tiny, I think she may have a good shot at it. Let me know your thoughts.

@SugarGracie Did you see this post I wrote you?

PS - to create a new thread just start a new post, and for continuity's sake put this, it's the web address of your current post: https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/need-assistance.271467/#post-3023178
