Hi Everyone,
We just had an updated fructose test for Simba. we did one a couple months ago when he was on prozinc. at the time, they said the test results were good, it was approx 356 i believe. and this was when he was on the dry food.

i finally got him eating wet food and we are using the merricks brand before grain chicken, beef or turkey. mainly chicken though. sometimes he will eat the cowboy cookout but mainly the chicken. anyway, then we switched to levemir b/c i was afraid of the shortage and i had read on here that so many people were doing well w/the leveimir.

so then we got another test b/c our goal is to go down to 1x a day for the insulin. right now we are at 1 unit, 2x a day.

so the results came back this morning at 476. however it was only the receptionist that gave me the # and said the dr would call on monday b/c he was out. but she said it was high and just the tone didnt make me feel good.

i guess what is your opinion? b/c the #'s are so much higher, do you think it is possible to go down to 1x a dday? and if not what have i done wrong? i've put him on the wet food, changed his insulin and so on.

thanks1

I use lantus, so I'm not quite sure about how it reacts, but from what I know, the fructosamine test just gives you tan average of the past few weeks. I was wondering if you're hometesting?

Hopefully someone will come in here to help you with the levemir side of things.

Hello Michelle,

Were you testing Simba's blood glucose at home when you removed the dry food? The reason I'm asking is that removing dry food can greatly reduce BG numbers in some cats (meaning they'd need less insulin). If the insulin that Simba was getting was too much after the dry food was removed then it is just possible that he may have 'rebounded'. Rebound happens when the blood glucose drops too low or too fast. The body can respond to this potential crisis by have the liver release glucose to raise the BG, and also releasing glucagon to keep the BG levels high. This is why it's important to test the cat's BG while transitioning to wet food.

Has Simba shown any unusual symptoms lately...?

If you're not hometesting would you consider giving it a go....? We can help you to learn....
