My diabetic cat is been sick with diarrhoea for the last few days and he wouldn't eat anything ( I tried just about everything) and today, I thought I will give him his old food which is Royal Canin dry food and he did ate it. Since he's been diagnose with diabetes, I have switch him to wet food completely (FF pâté) with out worry but since he's been sick he wouldn't eat any of it. I thought he would rather eat than no eat at all and he is also on insulin lantus 2.5 units 2 x day. We started home testing yesterday and today I gave him dry food at 4pm then have test and insulin at 6 pm. His bg pmps is 22.3 (417) which is quite high.

My question is: will its affect him and his insulin if I give him dry food short term? He probably will not eat tomorrow anyway. I am so worried. Pls help! Thank you

Re: Need Advise - am on my end wits

Hey Rosie

I've had a read through the boards, and not eating/not eating a lot and give lower numbers, so keep a good handle on your testing.........if you could setup a spreadsheet and link it to your signature, it will help the experienced members help you more easily.

I have seen advice given to not shoot if kitty isn't eating.......I don't have anywhere enough experience to advise, but after reading the boards, if it was Java, and he didn't eat, or I felt he wasn't eating enough, I wouldn't shoot.

Have you tried heating his wet food a little? Will smell awful to us, but may be a little more appealing to Chatran?

Try a little at a time..........I know the dry food will spike the bg numbers so if you can, try the heated wet stuff first. Try sprinkling a little cheese on top maybe?

Do try to get the spreadsheet set up, it will make it easier for people to help you work out what's happening with Chatran!

How do I do the spread sheet Charlene? Could you pls guide me to it? Thank you

Yes I tried heating his food and I also cooked chicken in a little olive oil but still wouldn't eat much. I did spoke to vet this morning, he said if he is not eating try just give half a dose but since he ate dry food and his bg very high - hubby decided to shoot.

His diarrhoea is back again

This is the link I used to set mine up.

He must still have a sore tum. Give the antibiotics time to work and keep going with offering him food. Perhaps try some plain boiled chicken? Olive oil might be a bit rich if his tummy is a bit sensitive.

Also, don't forget to breathe. You are doing everything you can, you can test Chatran and keep him from dropping low low which is more dangerous than being high while he is sick.

Here is the link to how to deal with low numbers. I have this printed out on my fridge in case I need it. Not to scare me, but so I know I'm ready if Java decides to give us some low numbers.

You guys are doing great! It's hard getting your head around everything and making decisions for an animal that can't actually tell us what is wrong!!

You've got this :)

Hehe, I had mine help me too!

I'm off to bed, so you and Chartan take care! Be gentle with yourself ok and check in in the morning ok?

Sweet dreams to you both and a settled tum tum for Chartran :)

Antibiotics may kill off good bacteria as well as bad bacteria. Using a probiotic such as Forti Flora about 2 hours after the antibiotic can put the good bacteria back in. See our SHOP link at the top of the page and check your local Amazon link. (The board gets a small fee from any purchases which helps keep it running)

Plain psyllium powder may be added to the food to help provide some absorption of excess liquid and retain liquid in the feces so you don't have constipation, too. You might try 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon mixed into a meal.

And a thought - does he always have diarrhea after the insulin shot? You may need a different insulin. It is possible to have an allergic reaction to an insulin, as it is a foreign protein being put in the body.

That makes sense BJ. He didnt have diarrhoea since he started. Using the insulin. Will speak to the vet about it.

Have already order probiotic online. - thank you.

Good morning Charlene. Chatran still not 100% but he did ate one of those FF broth thingy which is good. His third eyelid still showing.

Have been cleaning after him since 3 am (ewww) and haven't had enough sleep. Will see how he is today. His vet is on a day off not back till Monday so I hope he will progress today - fingers cross.

Its good to hear that he's eating! Do you have numbers of emergency vets nearby if you want to take him over the weekend? Might make you feel better!

So good to hear that he is eating - its a start :)

Crossing my fingers for you..........................perhaps a quick nap is on the cards for you today?

Yes I have all the numbers ready

My two legged baby just gone to day care so nap time is on my list after doing all the chores

When my kitty had diarrhea related to antibiotics I mixed some plain yogurt in with some canned cat food. She really loved it. It's not particularly low carb or anything, but might be worth a try until you can get the other probiotics. It may also help the canned food be more palatable, saving you carbs over the dry.

It didn't cure her clindamycin-related diarrhea but I think it did help.
