Hi,

My cat Whiskers was diagnosed with pancreatitis about 4 weeks ago. My vet has access to Whiskers SS, and just sent us this email.

'Hi, I left a message on your machine. I think the worsening values may be secondary to the recent bout of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can injure pancreatic Beta cells causing decreased insulin production. It looks like since the pancreatitis the best values have been on the 2.0 U twice a day. At this time I think a dose of 1.5-2 units twice a day is the best course. Ideally an hourly glucose curve would be best but whiskers may not allow for that. Dr. Kris Evans

Whiskers is at 1.25 units bid of Lantus. I am wondering what to do?

I wouldn't jump all the way up to 2u as that is quite a big increase right now. I do agree that it looks like she needs an increase - too much pink for my liking! If it were my kitty, I would go ahead and bump up to 1.5u and hold there for 3 days to see what happens and then think about another increase if the numbers still don't look good.

Hi,

Thanks for the advise. I see you also use lantus. I hope the other members of the lantus group agree. I would think 1.5 might be ok. After today it will have been 3 days at 1.25

Yes, according to the Lantus protocol, you have to wait 3 days before considering upping the dose. You have seen only 2 blue nadirs at this dose, with the rest being in the yellows. Going by protocol rules, your kitty has earned a 0.25u dose increase. Have you started posting regular condos over in the Lantus part of the forum? Health is the place to get a quick answer, but you will get a lot more trained lantus eyes over in the insulin specific part of the forum.
