Hi everyone, writing to you about sam again. she is on 4.50 units bid of lantus and eating fancy feast and tc feline raw. she is currently 12 lbs. for the past month i have been getting better control of her bg, but the better control or the increase in insulin is making her not feel good. she is still eating but just don't have enough energy to do anything. took her to vet and no infection or anything. her numbers range from pre shot 15 to 11 and her peak is usually 8 to 11. i was thinking that i would switch to levemir to see if it would make her feel better, but i was wondering how much to give her and do i skip a day or just switch without missing a dose? any thoughts would be great. and has anyone switched and there cat seemed better energy wise and numbers. i did not update spreadsheet, i really don't have time for that today. but she is not going low at anytime as i been checking her alot. and sense the increase to 4.50 units her peak is +11 or +12.

thanks
Crystal

As both are long lasting insulins you don't need to skip a shot- just shoot at the normal time.

When changing from one to another the accepted practice is to lower the dose by 30% so you are shooting only 70% of the old dose. Keep an eye on ketones when you do that just to watch for possible problems. It might take a day or three for Sam to adjust to the new insulin and I would say give it a week, baring no ketones, to start adjusting the dose.

Good luck!

thanks i am a little worried about ketones, but sam feels so bad all the time i think i have to try something.

Hi Crystal,

I'm sorry to hear that Sam isn't feeling good. And I don't use the same insulin as you and so can't help on that score...

But I'm wondering...have you made any changes at all to Sam's diet recently? (I'm thinking about possible vitamin/mineral deficiency...?)
Or have there been any changes in the household that might have upset Sam?
Is she poohing and peeing OK..?
Is she OK with you touching her, or does she act as though she's uncomfortable with that?
Do you have ketostix to test for ketones? (Although at those numbers it does seem unlikely that this would be the problem...)

Keeping everything crossed that she feels better soon.

(((Hugs))) to you,

Eliz

no changes, she been eating the same food ever sense she got diabetes which was in oct 2012 and she is peeing and pooing alright. no house hold changes as we are very careful not to change to much. she has been cranky and don't like to be touch to much but still jumping up on thinks i don't think she is having pain in legs or anything. have been testing for ketones.

There is no test data on the spreadsheet since 11/26/12. So you say she is getting 4.5 units now but we have no data to look at on that higher dose of insulin.
