I'm sitting in shock never thinking I would be back here 8 years after losing my beautiful Milo to diabetes- from these boards he was off insulin for a few years before he went back on.

Allie is the kitty we go right after Milo passed- she has been a healthy and wonderful kitty until she rapidly started going downhill on Friday. She started vomiting and was lethargic- took her to ER vet yesterday (I was out of town on a business trip so husband took her). They gave her anti-nausea meds and sent her home (she had not eaten or drank since Friday lunch). She wasn't really dehydrated.

I was able to give her fluids by eyedropper last night- this morning when we woke up she was just laying on the floor very lethargic. We were at our vet at 7am when they opened. They immediately started IV and tested blood- her glucose was 390 and high ketones in urine. They have given her insulin and her glucose has gone down- not sure of the numbers but she is still lethargic.

Vet said next 24-48 hours will tell if she can recover- I know how to care for a diabetic cat- know how to find help here (I am sure things have changed in 8 years). What I don't know is the best decision for Allie now- we don't want her hurting and suffering only to be told she won't survive. I don't want to make a hard decision and then wonder if she would get better.

I know each kitty is different- guess trying to see if anyone has been in similar situation and had advice. Milo displayed symptoms by drinking lots of water and never went through anything like this.

Thanks

I was in a similar situation in the sense that Minnie was diabetic with several other concurring health issues and after 3 years from being diagnosed she passed from intestinal cancer. I never thought I’d be back here other than to give advice but Bobo became diabetic last month. He’s healthy aside from that but Minnie had IBD, then diabetes, pneumonia, cardiomyopathy, asthma and finally a mass in her intestine the vet guessed was cancer which was causing her to not eat so I knew that last battle she wasn’t going to win. I made the decision to keep going with treatment and care, which included medicating her 12+ times a day for as long as she had quality of life and was fighting. And she did. She fought through it all and I could really tell she was a trooper through it all because she wanted to stick around with her brother and I. Ketones are life threatening and my advice to you would be to take it a moment at a time. I was in that spot too after her cardiac arrest where the er said the next 24 hours will determine if she makes it or not. She did. If Allie makes it and can still has good quality of life, I say give her the tools to stick around with you for as long as she wants and can :bighug:
