So....this morning he was surprisingly high at 301. Out of the blue. I sort of panicked and gave him 1 unit. After, I thought maybe I should have rechecked - that 301 might not have been correct? Anyway thanks to a snow day I can check him again off and on today. 100 at +4.
Are these swings normal?
Recently with advice from the group I had adjusted his doses.
Only other change was switch from tiny tiger to friskies pâté four meals ago. Gave him tiny tiger again this morning but he ate very little.
 
We don't know how low Keiffy went last night. This morning's number is likely a bounce. The only thing you can do about a bounce is to give the usual dose and wait it out.
Please get some tests in today.

And during the nights if you can. Test before bed and if you get up to use the facilities, take another test. The night cycles can be more active than the day cycles.
 
Second round of vomiting but he seems pretty empty so not really anything to throw up. I have to leave for a couple of hours but will be checking him again when I get home.
 
Wasn’t able to check before I left but just did. 178. He vomited again right after I checked him. He just ate a little - not much. Now I don’t know whether to shoot or not.

I'm not a Prozinc user but given that Keiffy has vomited several times I'd be wary of giving any insulin. I'm tagging some experienced Prozinc users for you as they would be able to give you more specific advice:

While you're waiting for replies, it would be helpful if you could post a note as to whether Keiffy has ever tested positive for ketones or has ever had an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis.

I hope his tum settles soon. Here's a helpful list of nausea symptoms to watch for, just in case you might need to take him to the vet tomorrow (so that you can get something to help instead of having to battle eating issues and worries about insulin administration over the weekend).

I'm hesitant to say "no insulin" if he's sick, because we don't want to encourage ketones, but previous skips show me he doesn't really skyrocket without insulin either, which is good. Might be best to skip I'm thinking? Is he showing signs of nausea or just vomiting?

I also see you're changing the dose a lot ... never give more just because pre-shot is high. 0.25u seems to be a good dose for him.
 
We’re so new at this I don’t think ketones have ever been checked but I will check his original lab work which was pretty extensive.
Other than not eating like he usually does he seems to feel fine. Even played tonight with a feather toy after his last bg check.
 
I just checked his lab work from when he was first diagnosed and it shows “trace” for ketones.
 
Okay, trace is not bad for a new diagnosis. That means no history of ketones (any time ketones are above "trace" you want to take them to the ER).eeKetones can form within hours so it's good to buy some ketostix to keep on-hand. I think you're safe to skip.
 
Still no appetite and vomited yellow liquid tonight. I guess he must be drinking as it was quite a bit. Numbers aren’t terrible but I don’t know what to do. Should I continue with .25 if over 140 and .5 over 200? Try to call the vet tomorrow? He’s acting ok but the not eating and vomiting worries me.
 
I wouldn't increase to .5u, 0.25 is doing a good job. If you can swing it I'd get a vet appointment in, he might need fluids since he can't keep anything down. Get some cerenia in him and see if that helps. He could even have a touch of pancreatitis. Were you able to get some ketostix? They sell them at pharmacies and Walmart.
 
I'd strongly recommend contacting the vet. Because of the way their metabolisms work cats can't go long without food (risk of developing hepatic lipidosis for any cat, and for a diabetic there's an additional risk of generating ketones). If you've managed to get hold of some urine ketone test strips I recommend you get a test as soon as possible: it's an important safety precaution.

Hi there. I see these posts are pretty old but I am new here, I just recently lost my boy Randy he was six years old. Almost two years ago. We rushes him to the er vet because he was lethargic and not himself. They had him there about a night ans a full day. Letter that night I went to pick him up. It was so sad... He was a noodle. They said he was diabetic and we needed to control his sugar. Now many of you know that ER vets are double if not triple the price of our regular vets. They wanted to keep him over night this being A SUNDAY AND I decided to take him home and take the rest and pray, I really thought he would die in my arms that night,
The following Morning I rushed him to his regular vet. For a week and a half he stayed with them during the day and I would pick him up at night to syringe feed him ( no insulin) They wanted to make sure his pain create us was being caused from the diabetes and not from any other underlying disease so they wanted me to feed him every two hours. As they did as well this went on for about a week and a half and my lethargic kitty came home to me happy. For the past two years I have taken him in weekly for sugar test then we moved to monthly. Just this past week ago week and a half he started to act a little weird. He was just at the vet the weekend before three days before actually they did all of his bloodwork and all of his test results came out fine. I rushed him in he was there for three days and in between that time he just got sicker and sicker and sicker they were able to get his blood sugar down and add the potassium however they said that unfortunately it’s spread to his liver and there’s not much coming back from that and that he was pretty much a limp noodle. My heart was absolutely broken. That shows you how fast a diabetic cat can turn around even if you’re doing all of the right things all of the right insulin all of the right testing. Unfortunately cats very good at hiding Not feeling well in illnesses unless they’re really really sick. My veterinarian saved his life for the first time I was able to get another two years out of him. He was only six years old and we are very heartbroken. So is she. She looked at him as one of her cases because she worked very hard on getting him well and for the most part he was. It is that Ketoacidosis! I am still grieving he was my sidekick always by my side kind of like a puppy LOL when I turned around he was there with me every night. And as the vet and the vet techs and myself and my family all say one of the sweetest boys you had ever met. I really really wish there was some type of warning for this keto the attacks the liver that fast if there’s something that can never be done. It’s very scary and very heartbreaking. Three days later I paid a $1600 vet bill picked up my boys paw print in his cageAnd came home. I have an older camp that’s about a year and a half older than the other and he’s been moving around he misses him we all do. Thanks Jess

@CJ717 if your kitty is still not eating I would definitely take him to the vet to get checked over. Not eating and no insulin are two out of the three ingredients for ketones and DKA. He may just need some antinausea meds. Cats must eat or they will run into problems.

so sorry for your loss. Ketoacidosis can really do a number on cats which is why we recommend everyone test for ketones and test bg at home. if the bg is not well regulated ketones can appear and rise quickly.
 
Had a vet visit this morning. Labs are perfect! No ketones. No glucose in urine. No infection. I forgot to ask what his BG was but they are emailing me all the results. The vet said he had not expected everything in the labwork to look like a perfectly healthy cat. They gave him an anti-nausea shot and said to stop insulin and check back on Monday or Tuesday. He came home and ate a little immediately. He said to use an appetite stimulant twice each day. Apparently he was uncharacteristically VERY grumpy at the vet's. Hissing, swatting and trying to bite. Not like him at all. Here at home he seems perfectly comfortable and will even play with his toys.

So we are going to wait and watch. :-)

So glad the labs look good but I don't think you should stop the insulin. You don't have preshots under 120 yet. He still needs that insulin support for now.
 
Agreed, stopping insulin now while he is still not eating is just inviting ketones. Still needs his pancreas nursed a little while yet. Very glad to hear his labwork is good. I wonder if maybe he ate something that didn't agree with him and he got gastritis?
 
I agree with the others. You are not quite ready to stop the insulin. Apart from the risk of ketones, you want a strong remission which needs insulin to be given until your kitty is seeing all green numbers for at least a week before stopping insulin.

I didn’t see the messages to not stop insulin before bed last night. He and I were exhausted from the day so I didn’t even put him through the stress of another test. Got up this morning and he was 106. He ate very little again although he acted like he wanted food and I offered three different kinds. He is acting like he feels fine.

Numbers keep getting lower. Is it possible to have a hypo with no insulin? How low is dangerous?

He went once a week then once a month and was good for a year and three months then just like that everything went out of wack I’m still devastated. I would have tested at home, but we visited weekly then to once a month he was on 1 unit to 4 then back down to two and stayed at two for 4 months. If testing at home would’ve saved him I would have invested in a testing kit. I hear they’re expensive. I mean not that I hadn’t already spent thousands lol. I do miss him very much. He ate and I watched him like a hawk I thought I did everything right.
