Need Advice - trouble regulating post-surgery

My cat has had diabetes a little over a year now. She was previously regulated at 2.5u Lantus twice a day.

Recently she had dental surgery and since then we've been having trouble getting her regulated. 2.5u seems to be way too high - the max we've tried giving her is 1u twice a day but even that seems a little bit too much as she ends up with sub-100 glucose.

I've started doing at-home curves to try to figure this out. My vet has advised me not to give her a shot if she's under 300 - but I've started giving 1u if she's at 225+ because it doesn't seem to cause her to dip too low and I'm worried about her. She hardly ever goes over 300.

She is losing weight even though her glucose doesn't ever seem to be that high, so I'm about at my wit's end - I'm afraid to shoot if she's very low but it seems I may be catching the tail end of the last shot wearing off when I check, and then she's high for the rest of the day.

In an effort to figure this out, I did blood curves yesterday and today. Yesterday she had no insulin 24 hours prior to starting.

She free feeds on Wellness Core (dry) because it's the only thing she seems to like and will eat enough of consistently. Twice a day, if giving her insulin, I also give her a can of Fancy Feast - the only kind of food I can rely on her jumping on and eating immediately.

I'm not even sure what question to ask - other than what do I do?? Should I have given her a shot this morning when she was at 91? Should I be trying half a unit twice a day instead?

Sunday (7/3/2011)
No insulin for 24 hours prior
10am - 211
12pm - 239
2pm - 240
4pm - 201
6pm - 242
8pm - 218
8:30pm - 1 unit insulin w/ canned food
10:30pm - 242

Monday (7/4/2011)
8:30am - 91
8:30am - canned food, no insulin
10:30am - 187
12:30pm - 219
2:30pm - 179
4:30pm - 161
9:00pm - 89/103 (I was surprised by the low number so I retested and got 103)

Edited to add - and in case you couldn't tell from the number of times we've checked her blood, I think I must have the most patient cat in the world

I can reassure you that having dental done can lower BG levels by the amounts you have seen. I'll leave the lantus experts to comment on dosing.

It can take a few days at a constant dose to get the effect of Lantus to be consistent. Based on your limited data I would reduce the dose to 1/2 unit. and see what that does. Make sure you do a pre-shot BG each time too.

And now it's 9pm and she's down to "normal" glucose levels.. so I'm not going to give her a shot. But why is she losing weight. :( (Updated the chart above in an edit)
