Need advice re: PM shot!

Would someone with more experience than me please take a look at Squallie's SS? I don't know if this is all from bouncing but I'm at my wits' end trying to figure this out! The past few days his #s have just baffled me. And tonight he is only 133 at PMPS, too low for me to shoot, and if history holds true he probably won't come up high enough even if I stall for a while. But that will pretty much guarantee he'll be back up in really high numbers tomorrow. We just don't seem to be able to break this cycle and I don't know what to do! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I wish I had some sage words of wisdom to give you Lucy!! I just don't know enough about Vetsulin to really be much help!

I might try stalling again and see how much he comes up...if he DOES start climbing and you can be around to test tonight (and have plenty of supplies) you might try shooting ...maybe even less than .5?
 
I can test all night if need be, that's no problem. The past few nights he's actually gone up after his shot, rather than down. I'm ready to tear my hair out, lol, I just don't seem to be able to break this weird cycle he seems to have fallen into.:(
 
I guess I don't know whether the last 4-5 days have been a bounce , or if I'm not giving enough insulin. Or too much. I just don't know and It's confusing and frustrating. Aarrgh!:arghh::arghh::arghh:
 
He has gotten pretty unpredictable, Lucy. We would think you could use your sliding scale, giving a little more on the pinks and a little less on the yellows, but he drops sometimes and doesn't drop other times. The only thing I can figure is that maybe Mr. P comes to visit on those unexpected lower preshots? Not sure that is the case, but it does put a nice slant on the unpredictability. And makes it less about your figuring out the perfect dose and more about it being difficult to figure. I guess I'd just go along and see. The good news is that he is on a very small dose and his numbers are generally under the renal threshold. If you look back over the colors for the past week or so, the colors are nice!
 
Thanks Sue, I appreciate the encouragement. I just feel really helpless to help him, and it's so frustrating. As you point out , it's the unpredictability that gets me, every time I think I've got a handle on it, his numbers go in the opposite direction from where I thought they would! He did have some good colors but now he's getting those reds again, and they scare me.
 
@Sue and Oliver (GA) Hi, Sue, I was just reading some advice you gave on another thread regarding food, and it made me re-evaluate what Squallie eats. All his food is 4% carbs or less, but he gets a lot of it. Could I be overfeeding him, and would this make his BG spike, even with the low carbs? He is not gaining any weight, if anything he may have lost 1/2 - 1 lb since he started on insulin. He weighs between 13 and 13 1/2 lbs now, and he's eating about 640 calories a day. I didn't realize he was consuming that many total calories. All my cats eat the same thing, and none of them are gaining weight, but it certainly seems like a very large amount of calories.

ETA: Actually, the calorie count may be higher than that; the measurement I used to convert 1/3c to oz was for dry matter, in this case, flour. I suspect the cat food is heavier!

Hi Lucy, 640 calories is a lot. Bubba is a BIG cat and he weighs 17 lbs. I am giving him 300 - 330 calories a day. The formula for calories is 13.5 times the body weight of the cat then add 70. So Bubba is 17 lbs X 13.5 =229.5 + 70 = 299.5 . I am giving a bit more because I would like to see him at 18 lbs. again. Robin has some really good food ideas that might help you as Sue mentioned.
 
Bobbie, I think I did the calculations wrong - I used a wrong number. I'm recalculating it now.

Okay, I did have it wrong, he's eating about 270 calories a day, and for his weight it should be 252.25, so I'm in the right ballpark. Whew! I thought that 640 seemed weirdly high, glad to know I was wrong!

Oh Good! He would be a little rolly polly by now with 640 calories! :p
 
Yes, that's what I thought, too! That's what made me go over it again, I figured something had to be wrong, it just didn't seem possible that my cats were eating that much, and no one was gaining any weight. 600+ calories is a lot of food!
