Hi Beth, I answered you on one of your other threads too. Have you gotten Miss Kitty on the low carb food-pate type canned food only no gravy? This would be a good time to do that. The change in food alone can help lower her glucose significantly. Many of us use Fancy Feast Classic or Friskies Pates. Make sure you keep testing her for ketones. Did your vet check for that? That's the most important thing for now. I don't know where you live, but I live in a small town and thought I'd have to go to the next town to fill mine, I got lucky, but try that. If not, take a deep breath, change her food and get the insulin 1st thing Mon AM. Keep us posted.

  1. changed food already.have 9lives and going to see if she likes fancy feast classics picky cat.getting her completely will take some time lol

She is happy to be home.i also remember her saying that in the pen they dilute the insulin.maybe I can draw it farther up and it equal a 1/2 that way?

I haven't met too many cats that don't like the Fancy Feast Classics! I don't know. I use a Levemir pen, and draw it into a syringe, but I got it from a regular human pharmacy. I don't know if your pet pharmacy is different. Can you call the vet clinic tomorrow and ask what kind of insulin it is?

Vet said no ketones.im going to keep an eye on it.they were surprised I caught it so early and knew as much as I did.i owe that to this site and plenty of reading lol
It is a human pharmacy but they do pet medicines too there

Beth, I am soooo glad no ketones, I was worried about that when you told me her breath was fruity smelling. You are doing great. Miss Kitty is lucky you are her bean. :)

It's probably Lantus or Levemir. Both are excellent as is ProZinc. Many have had good results from Vetsulin, but it doesn't always last 12 hours and can be a bit harsh. How long a pen lasts, depends on the dosage. The one I have is 300 units(I think)

This pen is 100 units and yes on a 100 unit syringe that she told me I would need 1/2 would be impossible but on a 30 unit syringe a 1/2 unit would be easy for me to draw up.but since she is changing the insulin to where I can pull a half up by diluting it 100 unit will have to do but if I switch to something else and need to read a smaller dose like that than a 30 unit would do great.so she could have called me in a bottle.i guess she wasn't sure I knew some things about syringes etc.when my mom started working at humane society they were using insulin syringes and needles to give the animals shots with.booster shots etc.my mom ended up switching them to reg needles and syringes cause they kept bending and wasting so many.i use to go up and help out by giving them shots or whatever else needed to be done.

Is it true cats can go a long time ok with 600 blood sugar ?

The sooner you can get your cat's BG under the renal threshold (somewhere around 280-300) the better, less chance of ketones and having DKA complications. Plus, the will feel better also.
