Member Since 2012
Yesterday I took Frisky to the vet for some blood work. I did this because it had not been done since July of 2010 when I found out she had diabetes. While there Frisky urinated in her pet carrier and had a very strong smell. The vet kept her there to do a test for urinary tract infection and low and behold to quote the vet it was a "ragging urinary tract infection."

This morning the vet called me about the blood work and everything was good except Frisky's liver numbers and they where very high. We talked about having an ultrasound done on the liver but at this time is not something I can not afford to have done. the other option was to give it about a month and have more blood work done to see if the liver numbers come down.

The question I have is, Could the urinary tract infection have caused the liver numbers to be high?

I did not think about this till after I hung up the phone and right now I am too upset just thinking about Frisky's liver maybe failing that It is hard for me to call her back and try to get through asking the question. I thought if I ask it on here that it may help clear my head. I may very well be over reacting and I hope I am. I just need some one to tell me I am in fact over reacting. My fear is that it is cancer and if it is I just don't have the money to be able to treat it.

Thanks.

What are her numbers like? Is she on/off insulin? If she is on insulin and her levels are above the renal threshold (around 250+) then her liver numbers might be higher also, even if there are no specific liver issues.

She is still on insulin. Lantis 3.5(U100) units twice a day. Her numbers this morning was 241 which is where is close to where they are every morning and evening. They run between 200 and 260.

Her numbers have been in that range since she was switched from Prozink to Lantus. When she was on Prozink her numbers were all over the place, but with the Lantus it seems to have flat lined. The last unit change 3 to 3.5 seemed to have no effect the numbers stayed the same.

That sounds like a decent range for pre shots. Do you get midcycle numbers too? That will give you a much better idea how that dose is really working.

Some people like to research. For some people, it is scarier. Don't know which you are, but there are lots of sites on the internet for cats and liver disease. If nothing else, you could look at the symptoms and see if any sound like your kitty:

Everything I read is that if it is liver disease, it is certainly treatable.

I do try to get mid readings when I can. I do her curves at home then call the vet and go over the numbers with her. The last curve I did was 2 weeks ago and 255 was her high and the low was 221.

I have looked up some things on Liver Disease but that made it worse because a lot of the treatments I will not be able to afford. If it is some more that just an infection. She does nit show signs of any of the symptoms. I am going to try to tho get the money to have the ultrasound done and go from there and hope it is nothing.

Thanks for the help. My mind is a little more at ease just typing this all out.

That is a pretty high low. If you'd want to explore her numbers further, you want go over to the Lantus forum and read the informational stickies there (if you haven't)

My mother always said 90% of the things you worry about don't happen. And darn if she wasn't usually right. Maybe the UTI is a big part of the issue here. I'd wait to see.

Denmarin helps support the liver

Around $25 for 30 tablets.

Product Description
Denamarin contains SAMe which markedly increases liver glutathione levels, a potent antioxidant. SAMe also helps protect liver cells from cell death and may help cell repair and regeneration. Denamarin also has Silybin, the most active part of an extract from milk thistle. Silybin acts as an antioxidant and stimulates the flow of bile through the liver to aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients from your pet's diet. Silybin also helps with liver cell regeneration and may enhance levels of glutathione, the liver's major "detoxifying" agent.

Thanks. I will look in to this.

I give my cat Denamarin, and I know it's for the liver, but J.D. gets it for it's off label use to help with dementia.
