This pancreatitis attack was bad, making him return to the hospitaL. He also has bilateral corneal ulcers and a UTI. So, he went back to the hosp because he wasn't eating or drinking and feeling poorly. IVs have brought him back to eating. The concern is one of his eye ulcers may be at the point of needing a graft or the eye will explode. His UTI is causing some retention. He is 14 years old, with a hx of chronic pancreatitis. I will do anything for him.

Just when do you say a kitty has had enough? Just when do your finances say enough? I am still paying my charges for vet bills of 2009 and 10. The bill this time is up to 6 grand. I am mostly retired. But mostly it's am I doing too much for him? Is it too much to ask of a kitty to go thru? I don't want his eye to rupture. I am so sad and mixed up and crazy without him here.

What you you do? Donna

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh

I'm sorry that you're in a position to have to make such a decision about your precious Shiloh. I'm new here, but I've read your posts and have sympathized with your kitty's plight. My vet suspects that my Willie's diabetes is just a manifestation of a potentially bigger (and as of yet unknown) problem. So I've been thinking through this issue, and I know just how hard it is.

My vet said something in passing that just really stuck with me.... "Kitties don't care how long they are here. They just want to feel good while they are." You know your Shiloh better than anyone, and I think if you let that sentiment guide your decision, you'll come to the right answer for you and Shiloh.

Know that my heart goes out to you as you face this difficult decision.

(((Shiloh))) (((Donna)))

i can't speak for what you should do. but i wanted to share that Meowzi had a bad CP-UTI combination flare in Sept. 2009. we didn't get the diagnosis for days, so for days we plodded on not knowing what was wrong (we suspected the CP, but couldn't understand how it could be taking such a toll on her). we had minimal sleep from trying to stay up with her and comfort and feed and medicate her round the clock. it was awful, we were so exhausted we couldn't even look beyond the hour. it did cross my mind whether we were doing the right thing. 1.5 years later, we know we did.

i guess i'm thinking, don't let the CP and the UTI colour your decision. they're temporary, he should be able to get through those, although they're likely very painful right now. (he has pain meds?) his eyes - i don't know. and i hate that finances have to factor in, but that's the reality. what does your heart say? what do you think Shiloh would want?

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh

(((((((Donna))))))) my gosh that is a huge bill. I KNOW how much you love Shiloh we love him too.
I would be on here asking the same questions...I'm no help but PLEASE know we are praying for guidance and strength in what ever comes your way.

God bless you, God bless Shiloh,
jeanne

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh

there can come a point at which they have so many health issues that it feels kinder to take them away from pain.
but if shiloh is still enjoying life, i'd keep going as long as i could.

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh

I had a thought you might ask the vet about the corneal ulcers ... is it possible to get quality of life back if you removed the worst eye? It might be an option though I don't know how it compares in cost.

((((( Donna ))))) (((( Shiloh )))))

so sorry he is having multiple issues.
I think WCF is right in suggesting you focus on the eye issue and go from there. As she says, the UTI and CP flare are only temporary.
( although, yes they could happen again. But maybe get a CP flare treatment kit together at home and treat aggressively at first sign)

and remember to ask Shiloh what he wants. and check in w/ yourself to see what you can live with .
I know how hard it is to deal with kitties w/ multiple health issues. I have no regrets for what I did for Winnie and Wolfie.

healing wishes being sent to Shiloh. and more ((( hugs ))) for you.

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh, update with the A

Jean, Lisa's AC (We had talked 2 weeks ago) talked to Shiloh tonight. He says it is too much and he is getting very discouraged and thinking maybe it would be time to leave his body. Can't wait till I talk to the vet today. Had a bad night missing him. Took 2 Ativan and still couldn't sleep. :( Thanks for all your support. Donna

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh, update with the A

It's a matter of quality of life. When the quality of life suffers and there is no hope for improvement, that is the time to make decisions. I believe that your cat will let you know when they are ready.

I am sorry you and Shiloh are going through this. I wish you both peace and comfort.

(((( donna ))))

YOU know Shiloh best, please talk to him directly. Imho, he can tell YOU more than any AC.
He will tell you what he wants to do.

Having dealt w/ kitties w/ multiple health issues, I can understand how hard it all is.

what is the vet saying today?

Re: Need advice on what to do with Shiloh, update with the A

When to PTS is always a personnel decision. It is a very hard decision to make. Sending purrs and prayers.
