I recieved a call from my parents that their cat McCallie might be diabetic. I haven't had a diabetic that needed insulin since 2007. Squirt is diet controlled. The vet appointment is tomarrow. McCallie has been peeing alot, drinking alot, and has lost some weight. I rarely see McCallie so I didn't notice a difference. Of course, John and I are committed to care for McCallie. But I need advice. What are the newer insulins and do they come in cartridges. I want to be prepared when we go to the vet. Thanks ahead of time. Cindy

Well I think the 'new' insulin since then would have to be levemir. Which most who try seem to love. I am one of those.
If a cartridge is a 'pen' then yes, they come in pens.
I like it best as it gives, when working idealy, a very flat curve allowing you to shoot low #'s to keep low #'s.
Plus the levemir page is a very nice group.
Maybe you need a NK?

Thanks for the offer of the supplies, but I think I am okay at the moment. And if it is confirmed we will start immediately. I heard of something call prozinc.... need some info on that.

ProZinc is the new PZI. A lot like the old insulin - no shed so can be more flexible to dose. All three insulins - Levemir, Lantus and ProZinc are used by members. All are mild long lasting insulins.

Pro Zinc has changed since you were last using insulin. It is a fairly new formula and still being figured out by the members in that room. I will say I was using it for a year with no success and then switched to levemir and within a week or so I began to feel very much in control
Stop by the PZ room and see what they do.

BigMac highly recommends Levemir. :-D He went OTJ back in 2008 after 4 months (6 weeks on Vetsulin first...) And when he came out of remission this Spring he went OTJ again with Levemir. I like it because (for BigMac anyway) it had a nice flat curve. I could take his numbers down slowly and evenly.

This year I used the Flexpen. 5 pens per package. They were easy to use with a syringe and created less waste. Back in 2008 I used the vial but he went OTJ so quickly (2 months or so) that the vial was actually more economical in that case. But you never really know what is going to happen so I'd recommend the Flexpen.

P.S. Hey Cindy, I love the name McCallie. Is this a well schooled kitty?

He was found on McCallie Ave. LOL! Named by the humane society. But he is smart enought to have gone to either McCallie or Baylor. I wondered if you would catch that. By the way, what type needles do I need with levemir?

Syringes...U-100 syringes. 3/10cc, 31ga, "short" needles 5/16" with 1/2-unit marks.
NOT 1/2cc capacity syringes, which some pharmacists will try to sell you instead of 1/2-unit marks.

I used 31 gauge, short needle, with half unit markings. Like this:

I ordered them from Hocks. But they no longer are a sponsor of this site, so I've gone to American Diabetes Wholesale. There are many brands that sell syringes with the half unit markings.

P.S. If you need some before your order comes in, I can give you a bunch. Sending you a PM...

Thanks guys.... I have made notes and I am getting prepared. We will know for sure that he is diabetic tomarrow. I am a little nervous but I believe everything will go the way God intended.

Hi Cindy - just hung up the phone from you - after you use the syringes you're getting, you can use the Reli-On syringes also - $13/box of 100.

Worried after talking to you last night and when you called tonight I figured you were indeed going to commit. Have you warned Jasper - or better yet, have you warned McCalllie about Jasper? Might be wise to have a talk with one or the other of them.....

Stay in touch - and as I say, if I can help, let me know - short of driving to Chat. that is. :-|

Sending high hopes for McCallie's #'s to be low enough to try diet control first and high hopes that works. But as an alternative, Dude of course recommends Levemir also - you KNOW how he drops on that.

Love ya
