Ok... so WHO on here has actually USED the savings card to get their Lantus pens?

I tried to, but had signed up as myself (not as Tink) and it didn't work. I was told it had to be in his name. But now I'm trying to sign HIM up, and since he's "a minor" it tells me to sign up for him.

Due to the issue we ran into, Costco CALLED the Lantus folks and upon explaining the situation, the obvious answer was "well it's for people, not cats". But since folks here have used it - what's the secret???

I'm picking up my new pen tomorrow - so if anyone has advice on how to fill out the registration for the card, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You have to sign up using Tink's name and the age I believe needs to be over 16.You need to act like Tink is a human I called a local Target and they said they would honor it even though it is for a cat. I haven't used one yet as I paid full price for my first vial and the next was given to me as are the pens I will use starting tonight. Call first to make sure the pharmacy will run it knowing it is for a cat.

I'm at work, so real quick post....

I used the card at my local Target with Trix. Tink needs to be 18 when you feel the form out...as you know, make no mention that he's a cat! Of course your pharmacist will know he's a cat, but playing semi-dumb and not going on about that helps. In other words, don't go on and on about Tink being a cat...he's a family member!

One other big note...be sure you write down what you use for Tink's birthdate! I forgot to do this with Trix. After I used all the refills on our first card, I tried filling out a second card but used a different birthdate. The fine folks at Lantus weren't pleased about that! Fortunately, Trix went OTJ right after that, so it still dangles out there as an "unresolved issue".

Hmm... so I'll try filling it out as if Tink is 18. However, since I've already filled once before, the pharmacy has his dob different. I guess I can just give them my new (18yr old) date and correct them when they tell me the "wrong" one. Worth a shot.

If it doesn't work, maybe I'll just start filling at Target. Sounds like they dont care.

UGH. Still didn't work. Costco said (after waiting ten minutes for them to run it) that "it's only valid for humans, not cats". I told her others had used it for cats and she just gave me a "I dont know" shrug. I'm not sure our Target has a pharmacy... but I'll have to call and find out.

I'm starting to wonder though... Tink is up to 6 units a day and I'm doing another increase tonight, so it'll be 6.5/day. I'm thinking I may be better off buying a vial. The pen I'm on now will have lasted about 7 weeks (but I started out with very small doses). Based on 6.5u/day, the 300u pen will only last 46 days. I pay $77 for it after sales tax. How long is a vial good for?? I think when I bought a vial when he was diagnosed (which sadly we only used a few doses of), it was around $200, but it's likely cheaper at Costco.

Techinically the card really is only for humans, so if they already know it's for a cat, there's no going back. Trying Target may work out...it's worth a shot!

You are right though..the higher the dose, the more cost-effective a vial comes. It might be worth doing the math on that.

Costco knew it was for a cat. But I dont know how Lantus would have known that unless Costco specifically told them.

How long is a vial able to be used? If it's at least 4mo, I think it'd be a wash, depending on the vial price. Though I suppose even if it's a wash, the pens are more convenient on the budget. If it lasts longer than that though (say, up to 6mo) it would probably be worth it. And, since we haven't hit a magic number on dose yet, who knows what his final dose will be? I keep hoping he'll go OTJ again... but given that it's now going on 4 months of totally crazy numbers with not a ton of improvement, that possibility seems to be dwindling.

I used to use the vial for Furball. My first vial lasted almost a whole year. I used it until it was almost gone. I just watched for floaties and was careful with how I handled it and kept it refrigerated.

My vial lasted 6 months but was less potent toward the end. The second one expired and so I only got 4 months out of it.
