Sheba has changed to Fancy Fest Classics after being able to graze on dry food all day pre-diagnosis. She weighs 13.5 pounds. How many ounces should she receive?

Side note: we work really longs hours, hence the reason she was always allowed to graze. She used to get 1/2 cup of dry food in the a.m. and and 1/2 cup in the p.m and then sometimes 1/4 cup when we went to bed. However, her EX-vet had her on weight management dry food that never worked.

Thanks!

Hey Yvette! Please go back and "edit" your subject line and choose "no prefix"...the GA means "gone ahead" or "guardian angel" and is used when one of our kitties has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge

When we see it, our hearts skip a beat!

Weight management dry food only made my cats fat!
The general rule of thumb is 15-20 calories per pound of weight. Because different foods have different calories, it could mean you feed a different amount depending on the flavor. Most FF Classics are around 70-90 calories per can so she's probably going to need close to 3 cans a day. Most of my cats, unless very active, do fine with about 2-3 cans a day.

Is 13.5 an "ideal" weight? If not, do you know what weight would be?

There's a general formula to start with that's [13.6 X ideal weight in pounds] + 70....so if 13.5 is an ideal weight, that would be about 255 calories per day.

The FOOD CHART has most of the Fancy Feast classic foods at 82-90 calories per 3 oz can, so if he's only getting 2 cans a day, he's not getting enough calories (by that formula)

Lots of us have bought baby scales like this and we weigh our cats once or twice a week....if they need to gain, we add more food...if they need to lose we reduce

You can use a regular bathroom scale (although it's not as exact) and weigh yourself, pick up the cat and then do the math that will give you a "general" idea too

My vet told me she was overweight and that she needed to loose a few pounds.

She was visibly overweight to me before. She lost 2 1/2 pounds since November due to the diabetes.
Based on the charts she still looks a bit overweight.
She was is a kitten of a stray, so I'm not sure of her breed. However, she looks like a large breed cat.

My kittys are almost your kitty's size. My one baby was at one time 15 lbs. With them being off the w/d they have both lost a little weight. I feed them each 6oz of Friskies pate and divide it between 4 meals.

I will try to figure out how to post some pics tomorrow. I need to stop obsessing now and get some sleep before work in the morning! Thanks again!
