Hi, it has been a long time since I was here. Morgaine went into remission after being diagnosed last May. She had been doing really well and her bs was under 100 each time I checked it. Today I noticed increased drinking and peeing and tested her. She was at 199 so something is up. I just contacted Dr. Lisa but haven't heard back from her. She had helped me get her into remission last year. She has not been eating anything but low carb, high protein Pro Plan and some freeze dried chicken treats. Has anyone had this happen. I am think she will need insulin but I do not want to rush into that without some advice. I have typw 1 diabetes myself so I know how to do this but I could really use some help/support. I also do not have a vet right now. I am unable to get her to a vet regularly because I am disabled and do not drive. The home vets I have used do not know anything about current treatment for diabetes nor do they want to be bothered.

Re: Need Advice

It's possible that something else is going on with her. such as an infection somewhere, maybe needing a dental, etc. Anything can cause the BG's to go up especially tooth issues or illness/infection.

If it continues, the only way to figure it out, is by an exam to rule out other issues. And if everything comes back fine, then it's possible your cat may need to go back on insulin, if only for a short time.

Re: Need Advice

Thanks for the advice. She was never put on insulin as I was able to get her to go into remission with a diet change. I will check her BS and wait until I consult with a vet before doing anything. My concern is that she is symptomatic with increased thirst etc.

Re: Need Advice

ah never on insulin - one of the lucky ones.

Well hopefully, this is a minor blip and all will be back to normal before you know it.

Now I am puzzled

I'm puzzled. I checked her 3+ hours after eating and she is at 119 now. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Have any of you had this happen. Remember, no insulin has been given to Morgaine, ever. So at 12:30 PM she was 199. She had just eaten a 1.5 ounce serving of Pro Plan Chicken and Liver and 3 hours later she was 119.

I am just going to echo Hillary there. If your cat has an infection or something, that may be causing it. If that is ruled out, your cat may need insulin, at least for a bit. Once a cat is diabetic it is always diabetic, so even if you did initially get your cat into remission, there is always that chance that they will come out. It does happen. It also happens that you can potentially get your cat back into diet controlled remission with proper care. I would get your cat checked out to make sure he is not ill and have his teeth checked.

No high carb foods are available to her.

I am so perplexed because she has been running under 80 for the past few months. I was only checking her monthly bercause she was doing so well and now I am wondering if she is fluctuating up to some higher numbers at times. I guess I need to test her regularly again and see how it goes.

Could be. Watch her urine for blood or painful urination. I know it's hard to get her to the vet, but it is really the only way to find out what is wrong.
