I'm trying to figure out the correct dosage for Spaz. I've been trying to keep to his 9:30 am & pm shot schedule, test more, & feed on a more regular basis. His numbers still aren't as low as I'd like. I don't know what else I can do...I really need some advice. If anyone could possibly look at our ss and give me opinions I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much for any help! Hugs, Kelly & Spaz :-)

Hi Kelly & Spaz, Welcome to LL!
I am not doseage advice expert, but definitely it'll help if you have more mid-cycle test on Spaz. Lantus dosage is based upon the lowest bg number usually appear at around +4 to +8 after the shot.
I am sure somebody with more experience will come along to give you the advice.

Hello Kelly and welcome,
So glad you are testing and committed. Tortie (Helen) is correct you are are going to have to do a curve and then start mid-testing.
The dose experts will be along with specifics. I have some thought on what they'll advise, but think it's best to wait for them.
Once you have someone overseeing dosage, you will get Spaz regulated. These guys know their stuff. Make sure you've read all
the sticky's on Lantus. You are in good hands.

Helen and Shelly are correct. You have to get some idea of what Spaz is doing around mid cycle if you are going to get a correct dose. I think his numbers are way too high but without more data, we don't know if they are too high because there isn't enough insulin or because he's dropping low or dropping fast and bouncing back up.

You were doing fine on the PM cycles until 2/14 but you are missing half his data by having nothing for the am cycles.

Is there any way to adjust your shot times so you can get a +2 in the mornings and maybe an a.m. Cycle +10 or +11 (before PMPS)?

And I would suggest that every day you don't work, you get at least at +2, +6, +10.

There's just no way to suggest a good dose if you don't have the data......although to tell you the truth, I would not have taken him down in dose without getting the tests that showed he was going low or dropping fast.

Are you checking him daily for ketones?

I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner...I'm moving out of a DV relationship and the move date is Saturday the 23rd so have been really busy.

Thanks for the advice & welcomes everyone, I really appreciate it! I will start testing Spaz more. I haven't tested for ketones...never thought he'd have them (no reason for me to think that tho  ). I'm disabled so I don't work...just go out to appointments and to my Clubhouse sometimes.

Thanks again and I will try to post again soon! Hugs, Kelly & Spaz :-)

Hi, and Welcome :-D

I wish you luck with your move and hope you are much happier in your new place.

I agree with Marje. We need to see the nadir (lowest point) in his numbers in order to help you with your dosing decisions. I too was wondering why you had reduced his dose. If you could pick up some ketone test strips that would be great. I think I paid less than $10 for mine at WalMart and the ReliOn ones I bought will be good for 6 months after opening.

Just another voice suggesting that you get some additional spot checks in. Even if you can get one test in between each of your pre-shot tests, that will help a lot.

Just out of curiosity, I'm not sure why you were reducing Spaz's dose. Was someone suggesting that his dose was too high?

Ok, so I'll really try to get the +2, +4, +6, +8, +10, & +11's. How long should I keep taking all them readings? I will be getting some keytone test strips as soon as I can get to Wal-Mart again. I reduced Spaz's dose because I thought it was too high. I was afraid that I was giving him too much insulin and that was why his numbers were high. I should've gotten on here when I started testing & shooting before making any adjustments.
Thanks for all the positivity...it means alot! Hugs, Kelly & Spaz :-)

I wouldn't get all those tests every cycle. I'd try for a +2, +6, and +10 and maybe the next day get a +3, +5, -+9 unless his numbers are low...then you would have to get more.

Just let us know when you get a few cycles tested and we can help you with a dose.

Ok, all I could think was "his poor ears"! lol Thanks, I will be sure to get the checks in and put in the ss. I have entered more since the other night, but I'm sure it's still not enough since it's only been like a day or two's worth. Thanks again! Hugs, Kelly & Spaz :-)

Much better! Yes..you basically just want to get some spot checks in both cycles but don't stay up all night to test. If you can get a +2 and a before bed if he's high at night, then that's ok. Then when you get up in the morning, if you can get a +11, that would also help. A few spot checks every cycle will help.

Just based on what you have, unless he comes down into blue, I'd give him one more cycle at .5u and take him up to .75u.

One cycle is 12 hours. There are two cycles in a day...the a.m. Cycle and the p.m. Cycle. You need to test before the AM preshot and before the PM preshot. And then during each cycle, do your spot checks.

Ok, that's what I thought...but wanted to be sure. Thanks so much & I will try to stay diligent. Hugs, Kelly & Spaz :-)
