On another forum where people know I had a diabetic cat, and refer people here of course... I got an email from a member:

and told me about his diabetic cat (8 y/o) who now has very dry, flaky skin (and dry fur) after being on insulin for a few months. He's not doing home testing on BG but says the kitty's BG is under control now. (I told him about you and how great you were at home testing to try to inspire him to do it.)

Is the dry skin thing common for diabetic cats? I asked if T4 had been checked but he didn't know.

Maverick never had dry skin and if anything I see posts on oil and dandruff in an unregulated cat. What is the general consensus - is this a diabetes flag of some kind or like the person mentioned another unrelated issue?

I speak very highly of this wonderful forum. It was a blessing for Maverick and I. I will reply with info on FMDB and home testing inexpensively with a human meter, etc. Just curious about the skin.

Thanks!

Re: Diabetes and dry skin

It could be a number of things. Poor diet, unregulated, thyroid issues, etc. My Oscar continues to have dandruff even on a raw diet and marginal regulation. When is the last time the kitty had blood work done and what sort of numbers has the vet been getting on curves?

Re: Diabetes and dry skin

I don't have details and I'm not sure if the member can. Just curious if dry skin was an indicator of unregulated diabetes. If not I'll just push the home testing and joining here ;)

Re: Diabetes and dry skin

Forgive me for asking but I have so much on my plate. Is there a perfect youtube video to send my friend that she can share showing how easy it is to prick the ear and use the meter to test? I think this would sell him on this forum and home testing. But I don't have hours to watch videos. Since Maverick is an angel now I can't use him to create a quick one.

well, here's the hometesting link here on fdmb. if you scroll down there's several videos linked there.

here's results of my searching on youtube

and one that most don't think about at first is pawtesting. and Heather made one of her paw testing Raja

hope that helps. :-)

and yes, if i remember correctly i think i've heard of the dry flaky skin in an unregulated diabetic and that it clears up once treatment and proper diet gets going
