? NDW or bounce?

Increased dose from 1u to 1.25u yesterday AM. Nice green during PM cycle. Today sky high. Because of the recent increase and conversation here http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/increased-dose-triggers-ndw.178524/#post-1972610, initially thought NDW, but today is the first day following the increase, not the second or third. Also, the NDW definition says nothing about an initial lowering of BG levels.

All this points to yet another bounce, not NDW. Someone please tell me I am wrong, because if Fearless continues to bounce every single time he drops, when will he ever spend enough time in the greens to heal? I can't believe any cat ever got better following his typical pattern (1 cycle green, 5 cycles pink/red).

I'd have an easier time being patient if I knew that at some point Fearless will break this pattern. Can someone give me hope?

He *might* break this pattern or he might not. He might bounce all the way to remission or he might not. @Sue484 has a kitty that bounced like crazy and then just ... stopped.

We all hope for good numbers to help our kitties heal - I know I do. However, for peace of mind you have to be able to accept where you are at this point in time. Fearless is in charge here and all you can do is follow his lead. I'm sorry if this seems to be a downer comment. Teasel (and other situations in life) has taught me that I'm NOT in control, except for how I react.

To answer your question, this looks like a bounce. Not every cat gets NDW when the dose is increased and even if a cat does, it doesn't mean it always will.

Bouncing is a tough one. My baby girl bounced for 5-1/2 years although she had long periods of no bouncing. It can be very frustrating but you have to learn that on the days he bounces, do something nice for yourself and get out of the house.

Also remember that when you get to a good dose and he can stay on it a bit, his body will start to adjust to the more normal numbers and will minimize the bouncing.

Good question!!! You're doing a good job learning and asking the right questions.

Bouncing is frustrating for everyone. He hasn't been on insulin but just a bit over 2 months and it does take them time to get their bodies use to the insulin and new lower carb food. The good news is that he is on a relatively low dose of insulin and he is hitting the greens. :cat:

I've seen crazy kitty bouncers who have bounced all the way off the juice...literally. So yes, they can still heal and get off the juice but bouncing is very frustrating for the beans.

Sorry, I've been a bit preoccupied with a kitty diagnosed with Lymphoma so haven't visited the boards lately. @fearlessmom have a look at Frankie's spreadsheet. He was one of the most bounciest cats ever. I too posted asking how he would ever get used to normal numbers if he bounced sky high off of a single solitary green. He was like that from April 2014 on diagnosis until August 2016, when he did suddenly just stop. I couldn't believe it and for weeks afterwards was expecting it to end. He still occasionally throws me the odd highish number, but it never lasts long. Never give up hoping. One day he might just surprise you!

I'm sorry you have that awful disease to deal with, Sue. :bighug: I hope your kitty responds well to treatment. Thanks for chiming in here with your experiences.

Thanks Kris. I thought diabetes was bad enough, but it's a walk in the park compared to Lymphoma. The stress is off the scale! I hate to jinx it, but Teddy seems a lot brighter after his third chemo last week. The downside is I am supposed to be going on holiday in 2 weeks. My friend is happy to take him to chemo but unhappy at the situation and terrified something will happen while I'm gone and so am I. I am so tempted to cut my losses and not go. I guess I will make a decision the day before. Anyone got any advice?

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Sue!

The holiday issue is a tough one. I guess a lot will depend on how you think Teddy is doing closer to your departure date and whether you have the wishes of anyone else (DH, etc.) to consider. If it's a holiday that doesn't involve flights, etc. you have a bit more freedom maybe? Shorten your time away? Holiday close to home? I'm sure you've considered all these options and more ... o_O

DH is fine with whatever I choose to do luckily. We are visiting his family so he won't miss out and I would never ask him to stay. Unfortunately this involves a 12 hour flight and it is already paid for.....

I guess a lot will depend on what Teddy shows you in the days before you're supposed to leave. Hard decision ... :(

No worries. Yesterday's situation resolved itself.

Hope you are able to vacation as planned, Sue. This is why I always purchase trip insurance (or use a CC w/insurance included to book the trip). You are a saint to care for a kitty with cancer. Can't imagine how tough that must be. Over the years I've dealt with feline hyperthyroidism, urinary issues, congestive heart failure, and now diabetes (not all in one cat, thank goodness) and each time I thought I couldn't get through it... but I did.

Stay strong!
