I've been going over the shortcut shopping list and comparing prices, flavors and carbs. For some reason, I get a warm fuzzy about the Nature's Variety. Does anyone use this? Today I bought a box of Friskies Pate, but it seems that most of them may be more carbs then Skipper will need. I might start using that with the other cats.

Let me know what you all think of it.

Thanks!

How is he doing today? Is he eating?

I prefer Fancy feast classic pates as they are mainly under 5% (and they are cheap!). The friskies can be up to 11% carbs- I would feed Skipper the lower carb ones out of those and give your other cats the rest. natures variety looks fine just be sure to get the grain free ones.

All his blood work numbers look great except his glucose which fluctuates a lot. They are now just fighting an unexplained fever that spikes at night. Apparently, the cyclical fevers are common with a virus. If the fever goes down then they can take him off iv fluids and he will be on the road to coming home. They agree with me that regulating his glucose numbers will be easier at home. Less stress and with the holidays there isn't someone in the vets office continually just someone who comes in and checks everyone and feeds them.
Okay, I will pull out the low carb ones and get some fancy feast. I wish it came in bigger servings. Who has the best price where you are?

Thank you and merry Christmas!

I also didn't get fancy feast because they are smaller. Then I realized I was halving the cans anyway and this way I had no cans of food in my fridge waiting for the second feeding. They are 3oz each so if you figure in the morning and evening feed you get 6 oz for the feedings, a regular friskies can is 5.5 oz. I am not saying one is better than the other I feed 3 different brands. I do have to say at my local store they have more variety in the fancy feast though. Incase you haven't seen it yet here is the link to a food chart that shows carbs in some varieties of the different brands. http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

Be sure you are looking at the Friskies PATES on the list. Turkey & Giblet is about 8% calories from carbohydrate.

Dallas is currently on the Nature's Variety Instinct limited ingredent duck & pea. It took him awhile to get into it (I had to mix it with his old food) but now he eats it fine. It comes in 5.5oz and 3oz. He eats the larger can for breakfast/dinner (1/2 can each time). I have the 3 ox cans as well. I split them into 3rds for his 2 daily snacks.
I have to say he doesn't eat the peas.... :-D

I feed NV too, but their raw food. It is ultra low carb and very low in phosphorus for older kitties who can have kidney problems.

There is a Friskies Special Diet line, the Turkey and Giblets is low carb and low Phos. PetSmart often has the 5.5oz can on sale for 49¢ a can. I don't think they make it in the big cans though.

Ann is correct friskies special diet only comes in 5.5 ounce cans not 13 ounce cans.

The Nature's variety raw is a great food option if he will eat it. Some cats need to get used to eating raw food.
