Nasty antibiotic - sulf-trim

hello,
I am needing some advice here.... I took Ittle Sista to the er vet due to a foot problem and she was put on clavamox... Regular vet monday and again of Friday....On Friday they also wanted her to take sulf-trim. We got this compounded and do an oral... She immediately throws up and foams for hours and hours after the medication.
Once more, I call the er cuz my vet is closed, they say not to worry about the sulf-trim... The reason the reg. vet put Sista on this additional med is because when her foot was unwrapped, there are nodules on her foot and leg....(one on the top of the foot and one up on the leg)...she thought the infection could be spreading.
I need to know if anyone has ever had this big of a problem and if there is something else that I could possibly use in its place????????
The med does no good if she throws up w/in one min. of trying to get her to take it! GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I found this description of SulfaTrim and at least one reference to pills (which may be easier):

Sulfatrim contains two different antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (hence the name Sulfatrim). These two antibiotics work in different but similar ways. Combining sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim increases the effectiveness of the drugs and decreases the chance of antibiotic resistance (the development of bacteria with the ability to resist antibiotics).

Trimethoprim does not belong to a specific class of medications. Sulfamethoxazole belongs to a group of drugs known as sulfonamides ("sulfa" drugs). Essentially, both sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim work by inhibiting the production of folic acid in bacteria, although they work in different stages of folic acid production. Folic acid is important for making proteins and DNA. Because humans obtain folic acid from the diet (and bacteria cannot), human cells are less affected by Sulfatrim.

Some of the common side effects of Sulfatrim include, but are not limited to: Loss of appetite, Rashes, Nausea, Vomiting, Itching.

I cant even keep it down her for 1 min. So I just feel this med. is useless to us.. I did get the pills this am, they are big, so I cut them into 3 pieces and used butter to coat and tried the pill pusher, and I cant get it down her. She foams for hours afterward, so I just thought someone might have some suggestions for an alternative...
Er vet said just keep w/ clavamox and not to worry and of course my vet was not in today and they are closed.... she is just now moving around a bit after the med was (tried to give) at 1ish...

The vet put Lillys pills in a clear gelcap. Its a clear capsule. I am not sure where you could pick them up at. Are there any vets near you or ER vets that maybe you could call? Perhaps a pharmacy and ask them if they have them. If you could put the pill in that where shes not tasting it maybe she could keep it down.
The capsules pull apart and you can put the pill back in it and put the capsule back together. Not sure now big your pills are. Just looked on the internet they are called (empty gelatin capsules)

omg, tytyt terri, did not think of that. I have empty capsules as I feed raw home made food and the vitamins that I empty would work... maybe I will try that tomorrow am!

Check if they compounded it with any berry anything. Many cats can't take the 'berry' flavorings - makes Snow foam at the mouth, hurl it out many feet away and refuse to get near me for days if I have a bottle in my hand. I can't use any of the amoxicillian from the vet - they all are berry flavor. They give me a prescription, I take it to CVS and have them fill it with bubblegum flavor. He can handle that just fine.

They made it in chicken flavor???? I think it could perhaps be a reaction?????
She will NOT get this tonite.... gave her the clavamox, she did not like it but it stayed down and she actually played for about 15 min!
 
Please be sure to read my Pilling Cats article if you are going to pill your cat - or worse - use gelatin capsules which get stuck in the distal esophagus worse than pills. Butter does not help this issue.

Also note that sulfa drugs can be toxic to cats.

On a good note....at least Convenia was not used by your vets. Since writing the Convenia article on my website I have had more deaths and serious side effects reported to me after cats (and one dog) received Convenia.

The butter was suggested to cover up the cuts in the pill to see if it would help in the foaming, it did not.
And, yes, I did read about the meds getting stuck in the throat etc which scares me but in the same breath, I am afraid to NOT give it to her as well.... but she is not going to be getting this med as she cant keep it down, not even for 1 min. anyway...we will continue with clavamox for now and call the vet tomorrow or perhaps call for a second opinion with another vet.
