Nanner update and what now?

We talked to Nanner's vet today and frankly I think I need to just start all over. I'm almost certain that he has been in a cycle of being given way to much insulin, had a bunch of carbs shoved down him, going hypo, and then rebounding way high. They started him off with 2U of humulin N and put him on science diet W/D, sure lets shove carbs down a diabetic, that's a great idea. Sorry. I'm still fuming. I don't think they could have done much more wrong if they had tried. It's a wonder the poor little guy is still with us. The vet just kept upping his insulin, they suspected his humans weren't giving him the insulin or at least not on a regular schedule, AAARRRGGG. Apparently they had multiple visits for "lessons" on how to give shots. The vet kept telling us how when he left to go to the shelter he was very well regulated and doing really well, yeah that's why his BG was off the meter yesterday morning and his litterbox was flooded, and I know it was cleaned the night before because we did it. I knew I should have brought him home the first day he was surrendered to the shelter. Ok enough of what was, I'll go pull some weeds or play a kill the monster game on the computer later and work off the frustration and anger about the whole thing.

This morning Nanner was at 247, so we did 1/2 can of friskies turkey and giblets, about 1/4 cup of dry (Iams digestive), and 1U of pro-zinc. Today he is feeling good, and there just isn't much in the litter box, yesterday it was flooded. He seems to be tolerating the canned well, no tummy upset symptoms at all, we've been giving him a little of the low carb canned for the last week or so as a treat when he gets his shots so I don't think it will cause tummy troubles. Tonight I'd like to just give him the low carb canned, and skip the shot and the dry food, providing his numbers aren't too high, and then see what his numbers are in the morning. Does it sound reasonable to go ahead with this at this point? I don't want to shock his system by changing food too fast, but so far he seems to tolerate the canned well, and he seems to be feeling SOOO much better today.

I think it depends on what his number is tonight, whether or not to skip. You want to avoid ketones as well as hypo. Do you need to stay with ProZinc? Lantus might work better for Nanner.

I know how frustrating it is, a few cats that I've adopted were untested FDs, unregulated and after a short time on good food, stable environment and hometesting, they've gone off insulin.

Did you get any tests midday?

Nanner is so lucky to have you in his corner :)

Sounds like you might have hit the nail on the head, he has been in constant rebound. Poor little guy.

If I understand correctly you are home testing, so if he was my cat, I think I would go back to square one and start again. If he is handling the canned food fine, I don't see any reason to not just switch him over. All 11 of mine went over with no problems whatsoever, in fact they thought they were in hog heaven when mom adopted a sugarbaby and all the dry food got replaced with yummy canned. If Nanner will eat it and it doesn't upset the tummy then go ahead and fed it to him, he will be better off, and if it does cause a problem you can always give him the dry back (knock wood that doesn't happen). Test him tonight and if he isn't over 200, don't worry about the shot, or course if he is high then I would stay at the 1u b.i.d. Just getting him off the dry carb-loaded food might do the trick for him. You are checking for ketones, right?

Now I'm no expert, but that would be how I would handle it if it was my Maxwell.

I would see what kind of number you get tonight, but not skip unless it is under 200. If you are around 200+ and worried about the impact of the food change, you can give .5 units.

Have you seen the PZI document? It has lots of valuable info.

So glad that Nanner has you on his side.
HUGS :YMHUG: and best wishes. Don't skip shot unless very low. can always do .25 or .50
