Hello, Tux and I are still new at this. This morning when I checked his BG before his shot it was only 5.3, so I elected not to shoot. (Most mornings he has been around 10) He didn't want to eat much either. I took him to work with me (work at a vet) because we are wanting to do another full panel on him. (we were unable to draw blood as he was very cranky - he is not a nice patient!) Anyhow, I fed him again at 11:30 and then checked him and he was 12.2 - so gave him his shot. My question is, since he didn't get his insulin until almost noon, when do I give him his evening dose? He is getting 1 unit BID Caninsulin. Usually I am injecting at 6:30/6:30. Wonder why he wasn't high this morning too - kind of strange.

Usually, if there are no other unusual circumstances (like not eating or not feeling well) a low number at amps could signal a lower dose needed. If I were you, I would reduce the dose to .5 units BID and see what happens with the numbers. (This is generally good news and may signal that the insulin is working well.)

As for the timing, you need a shootable, rising number before you shoot. (We generally say above 200 is a shootable number for a new diabetic.) You got a very long duration since last night's shot. Depending on your number, you may need to skip your usual evening shot. That may make your amps high tomorrow, but you would need to remember that it would represent 24 hours without insulin and try that lower dose. Your ideal is to have a shootable amps and pmps.

thanks - that may be what I have to do is lower the dose of insulin. Actually he is not feeling well - he is sleeping a lot, and his appetite is down. There may be more going on here - kidney concerns as his USG is consistently low. I am giving him SQ fluids every day too. He is just looking miserable. He has that look on his face....

Strange - this morning it's 9.8, so should I give him any insulin?? He is extremely miserable. He is trying to bite me. He looks so ill. No vomiting, he is eating the treats, but not his breakfast. I don't know what is going on. So confused.

So 176, right? Can you wait 30 minutes to see if the numbers rise? If you get up to 200, I would try that .5 and get a test in mid cycle. It is quite possible that he is going quite low mid cycle and that is not helping him feel well. I would definitely get some food in him, even if you have to syringe some in: Syringe feeding Getting your cat to eat
