Last night, I came home to a seriously hypo, barely-alive cat. When I tested him, my meter read "LO." A friend drove us to the ER while I rubbed maple syrup on his gums. When they tested him there, he was up to 37. Phew...

Myles was diagnosed a year ago in March. We started on Lantus and then switched to Lev. I wanted to do tight regulation but gave up on that idea ages ago because his numbers fluctuate so much. He's gone way low before but nothing as dramatic as last night.

The ER doc did blood tests and everything is normal, except he has pancreatitis. She's sending the blood out to determine whether the pancreatitis is chronic. I suspect it is.

I'll be asking for dosing advice later. But for now, I'd like to know what to do about the pancreatitis. What, if anything, do I do about his diet? He eats mostly Soulistic Chicken Dinner In Gravy and Soulistic Moist and Tender Salmon Dinner in gravy. Both are very low carb. He also eats some Fancy Feast pates. How will I know if he's having a flare?

I'd like to get this under control somehow, but have no idea how.

This has been a very unhappy spring and summer, and I haven't done a great job at keeping his spreadsheet up to date. I test at least twice a day, sometimes more. He was on 5.5u of Lev until the day before last when he went too low. I reduced his dose to 5u yesterday morning, and he hypoed last night.

He was on an insulin drip from last night until sometime this afternoon. When he kept going up, they stopped the drip and gave him 5u of Lev. I don't have his numbers from last night but here are today's. These are all eastern time.
8 am - 446
10 am - 454
noon - 535
2 pm - 544 (discontinued the insulin drip)
4 pm - 504, 5 unit of Lev
6 pm - 439
8 pm - 374

My Tuxie has chronic pancreatitis with numbers through the roof. His vet had suggested using prenisolone to help with the inflammation, but because of other health issues (besides the diabetes) he is unable to have any steroids. Even with his very high Specific fPLI he has only had 3 pancreatic attacks in the last year and a half. All of these were able to be dealt with using Sub Q fluids, cerenia injections for nausea and buprenorphine injections for the pain. I have also used SEB (slippery elm bark) to help with the nausea. So far this is all I have had to use (anti-jinx)

Here is a link to lots of information on pancreatitis:

I'm so sorry your baby is having these issues. Chronic pancreatitis is a possibility with diabetes. There is a good yahoo group for pancreatitis that might be helpful to you. Laura
