Myles is gone. He went peacefully this afternoon on my bed, in my arms. I didn't mean to send him off in a flood of tears. But being the kind of guy he was, he understood and was very tolerant of human frailties.

Myles was one of the first residents of my rescue's shelter. A good Samaritan found him starving and sick in a shopping center parking lot and gave him to us.

I loved him from the moment I saw the picture she sent me and knew we were meant to be together. Sometimes you feel an almost magical connection with a cat, even if it's just through a picture. Myles and I were very connected always, and I hope we always will be.

He was wise, gentle and always calm and steady. When I needed someone to talk to, he was always there. When the world of cat rescue brought more sadness than I could stand, his shoulder was the one I cried on. Being with him helped me put things in perspective.

Myles was one of three orange and white tuxedo cats at my house. I loved coming home and seeing my three handsome boys -- Myles, Sizzle and Soda -- lined up on the sidewalk waiting to greet me. Myles and Sizzle were close friends, and they often slept together in Sizzle's huge dog bed. They head bonked every time they walked by each other.

A year ago last March, Myles was diagnosed with diabetes. He was my third diabetic, and I thought we'd manage with ease. But his insulin never seemed to agree with him, and there were days when he looked like he wasn't feeling well. I suspected he had other health problems, but no one could ever figure out what they were.

Two weeks ago, I came home and found him unconscious. He'd hypoed. It took an entire weekend in the ER, but he pulled through. My excitement and relief faded quickly, though, when I tested him at home and got a "LO" reading on my meter. The wonderful people here helped me find an insulin dose that would be safe but still effective. But I could tell things were not right. My boy who always loved to eat, stopped eating on his own. He seemed disoriented and confused most of the time, and the coma seemed to affect his vision.

So today, he earned his angel wings. Fly free, dear friend, and enjoy those wings. You certainly deserve them. But please come visit me sometimes, too, because I'll always love you and miss you.

And thank you FDMB for being here for me and a beloved cat once again. I love you all.

((((Missy))) I'm so sorry to hear this. I was hoping Myles would turn around and improve. Sending you lots of sympathy.

Oh Missy, I am so truly sorry. You really did try to help Myles to get better, but it was all just more than he could handle. You made the most loving, generous choice in setting him free, and I know what it cost you. I am glad that you have the comfort of knowing you did everything you could for him. He is no longer suffering, and I know he will be watching over you from the Bridge, waiting for the day you will be reunited.

Fly free, sweet Myles, and land softly

I'm sure he's soaring high, lifted aloft by the boundless love evident from your post. Having them go peacefully, at home, surrounded by love is about as much as we can ask for when it's time, and I know he'll be waiting in a beautiful place waiting to see you again someday. Remember to send your bean a sign, okay Myles?
Hoping all the memories you shared brings you comfort when you need it most. Fly free Myles! :rb_icon:
