My rant!! Sorry in advance.

So here's my rant...

So for a long time Ballonee has been on 0.5 units of lantus bid (a couple of years now). She's never been an easy one to control. She was initially in and out of the hospital frequently and then stable for about a year. and then now..

So about a month ago Ballonee was admitted to the hospital with hypoglycemia on the 0.5 units of lantus, but the vet suggested not to decrease it because when they did her numbers skyrocketed and shes at risk for DKA. Then recently, about a month later, she had to be admitted to the hospital for hyperglycemia and dehydration (no DKA thank gosh) on the same lantus dose of 0.5 units.

She's a picky eater and she's overly anxious. It makes trying to stabilize her feel impossible. I literally spend every second with her since shes been out of the hospital. Shes on an anti-nausea medication as well as an appetite stimulant. I've just started SQ fluids. I do regular gluc checks etc... I just feel like I'm doing absolutely everything possible.. like I don't think I could be doing anymore. Shes been only one day out of the most recent hospitalization and already acting weird again. I know its classless to mention money and I'd spend everything I can on her. but her vet bills have been over 5000 this month (not including regular monthly diabetic supplies) and I'm worried that shes just going to keep needing hospitalization and I don't know how to keep up with the bills. It just feels really hopeless and frustrating and I feel bad for her.

Like I said I started Sub Q fluids again tonight. I only gave her 50cc as the vet recommended and she seems like she feels worse and not happy at all. Is it normal for them to not feel well initially?

I know this is a lot. Any advice or support would help.

Hi and welcome to you and Ballonnee,
I’m sure it’s very concerning having an unwell kitty and having to spend $5000 is a lot of money.
The first thing I notice is you don’t have the spreadsheet up to date. If you could update that with the 2 or 4 weeks BG data we can have a look and see what’s going on.
Without the data we can’t help much.
How much did the vet try and reduce the dose when he went down from 0.5 units?I assume they have run blood tests to see there is nothing else going on.
Would you be able to post the path results for us to see please?
If money is an issue I would also look at getting a human meter. They are much cheaper to run..

Thank you for your reply!
I will work on updating her information and spread sheet. Im using the one touch verio meter. I agree the alpha track wasn't affordable at all.
The vet tried to decrease her insulin from 0.5 units to 0.25 units. And yeah she had a full work up done including 3 x-rays. I'm really happy she has nothing else going on though!
Sorry what do you mean by path results?

Is there a way someone can let me know where to find the post where it says how to update your spread sheet. Its been a while and I had it saved on a different laptop. Thank you. I appreciate the help.

You should be able to edit it online. Sign in to google, then go to your spreadsheet. (If I'm misunderstanding your question just let me know.)

Did she do better with the SQ fluids today?
