My other cat Tyler has been overweight since he was about 2 years old. After I got him fixed, he put on a lot of weight over the years. He is 14 years old. He has always been about 20lbs. I recently weighted him and he was 16lbs which is good and has not been a drastic weight loss but over some time. I was concerned that he may also have diabetes so I just checked his glucose level. He was 177. Is this bad? I read online that their levels can fluctuate between 120-300 all day.
 
My vet mentioned once that anything under 12 mmol/L (216) is nothing to worry about. I've always been tempted to test my civvie, out of curiosity...

I wouldn't worry unless there are other symptoms.
 
We’re you trying to get him to lose weight?
Try to get a few more tests, one in the AM before eating, then one 2 hours after
 
I wouldn't worry about a 177... Had he eaten within the last two hours? Is he on lower carb food now? If you are concerned it's never a bad idea to go for a checkup.
 
Sooooo, I just checked my other cat Tyler again. This time it is 2 hours after his meal. He was 418! Ugh. I think I am going to be sick. He is 14 years old and a problem child at the vet. They literally have to gas him when I take him in to get checked. He is neutered and front declawed. (First cat I ever got and will NEVER declaw another cat ever again.) I am really not sure what to do. I really can not afford to take him to the vet and do blood tests right now. Booger is costing me enough for his diabetes every month. I know that sounds harsh but I want to do whatever I can to help my Tyler as he was my first baby. When I took Booger to the vet all the did was run blood work and check his BG level with the Alphatrak meter. He was in the 400s as well. @cmonmiracle @Sharon14
 
His breathe is starting to smell like Boogers did when he was diagnosed though Boogers was more of a chemical smell as where Tyler's is more sweet at the moment. Grrr. Doing the glucose curve today on him but I'm pretty sure he has it.

If his breath is smelling off I wouldn't wait. He's not getting any dry food is he? I know how you feel.... Some of my cats I DREAD a trip to the vet.
 
Infection and pain such as dental issues or pancratitis can also cause raised bg. 400's is really elevated though.
 
i agree with Janet, 400’s is pretty high. I’ve had stressed, sick kitties at the vet test into upper 200’s. How is he feeling? Be sure to test for ketones.
 
Oh NO!! I am constantly paranoid my civvie Monty will become diabetic, even though technically he shouldn't as he eats all low carb wet food and the lowest carb biscuits I can get here.
 
He was 542 this morning at AMPS :( I seriously want to cry. I k ow he may have some dental issues but anything else I'm not sure.
 
Tyler has been a loner since he was declawed and neutered. Just a lazy guy. When wants your attention he will ask for it. Other than that he just lays around and sleeps. So he's acting pretty norm for himself.
 
Bad breath can be an indicator of dental issues. Our vet was always amazed that our monster 28 pound beast was not diabetic, both Noah and his brother Nigel were slim and trim. When people say "No two cats are the same" it's not just folklore. There's no harm testing a non-diabetic cat. Whiska's Temptations as well as some other "harmless" treats will raise any cat's sugar level. The stress of going to the mean old vet can affect numbers as well.
When our boy Simon somehow escaped the house (he was not street smart) it changed him forever. He might have thought every meal was his last, it was for a week, and it shortened his life. Cats were never meant to sleep all day on your bed, all you can do is be extra vigilant.
 
He was about 22lbs. My vet was always amazed he wasn't either. He has not been getting any treats and I tested him before I fed him this morning. I know stress can cause higher levels and the only thing was he didnt want me messing with his ears. So I honestly do not know that trying to prick his ear would make him jump up to 542. I am pretty sure it is diabetes but I guess I am going to have to take him to the vet to be certain. I wish I could just start insulin treatment on him at a low dose since I already have it here but I know that would not be wise. Trying to get my problem child in to the vet but it doesnt look like it will be until monday.
 
And he just recently started to lose weight and its been a slower gradual weightloss compared to Boogers. I figured that since he wasn't as active he was eating less than normal and thats why he is losing weight. I am also afraid it will be something more serious causing his high BG levels. :(

Idjit also is a problem child at the vet, each time a little worse. They gave us Gabapentin 100 mg, 2 caps with evening meal, 2 caps at breakfast morning of exam. We were told it would not interfere with the curve we had done last week, and would reduce stress that would reflect on the BGs. I just cut open the caps and mixed with his dinner & breakfast. Worked really well, might work for Tyler.
 
Sometimes getting there is NOT half the fun. Try a soft-sided carrier or you can do a "Noah". Wrapped in a beach towel and piddle pads, hide his eyes and do an extreme cuddle. He's never been crated in 10+ years. Every little bit helps. Good luck.
 
This is agony for you and we all understand. However, it's always better to have facts and know what you're dealing with. If it turns out that he's diabetic too you'll figure out a routine. We always underestimate what we can handle until something gets dumped in our lap. There are a few members with two diabetics who could advise should it come to that. Not knowing is the worst! :bighug:
