Hi!! I did do an intoduction. Just looking for more insight. Olivia is only 18 months. It was confirmed Saturday she is diabetic. Her glucose level was 500. We took her back to the Vet on Monday and picked her up today. Her glucose level is still 350. We are starting her on 1 can of Fancy Feast Classic and she is getting 3 units of Vetsulin twice a day. She goes back to the Vet on the 22nd for a glucose check. Any advice is appreciated. The Vet said it's rare to see diabetes in a cat so young.

Hi Heather, glad you made it over to Health! As I was saying on your intro thread, I strongly suggest you consider home testing Olivia's glucose. 3units is a lot of insulin, and if you are switching her to a low carb food like Fancy Feast, her numbers may come down some. Even if they don't, by testing you'll know exactly how the Vetsulin is working. Often curves run at the vet are higher due to stress. Did the vet run any other tests?

She had a complete blood panal and physical. She was tested for feline leukemia. I will look into testing her at home. I don't think an ear prick will be that devastating to her. I know normal is 120. I do want to keep a journal as well. So the vet knows how she is doing. I would hate for her sugar to drop to low.

I would NOT start a cat on 3 units of Caninsulin!
If I was you I would phone the vet, voice my concerns about this high dose and discuss an option of starting the cat on a smaller dose like 2 units the most.

Even on Caninsulin website they stated that the starting dose should be no higher than 2 units twice a day.
Get the vet to read Caninsulin manufacturer recommendation.

My vet had me start Vetsulin at 11/2 once a day for about a week then twice a day. Then she slowly increased it until the numbers went down.

Sorry if I sound thick but what do you mean by 11/2?
Vetsulin should be given twice a day as it does not last long enough in a cat and I'm not sure what your vet tried to achieve by giving it once a day. With dosing like that you might lower the cat's BG later in the day and then have it high for the rest of 24 hour. Does not make sense but maybe the vet had their own reasons which would be interesting to know.

Larry, you bright button! Of course I can see it now. Being very tired recently.
Regards,
Marlena
