hi! My name is Natalie and I have a cat named Tiger. He’s 17 years old and I’ve had him since I was 9.

He was recently (beginning of September) diagnosed with kidney failure and shortly after, diabetes (end of October). I’m having a really hard time regulating his glucose levels.

We are home testing and giving 4 units of insulin twice a day (we started at 2 in September and his levels have been sporadic ever since. We just started four last week). He gets fluids once a week, in home every Sunday, and he is on Hills Prescription Diet food for kidney failure.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do or ask my vet to try to regulate his levels? It’s regularly 500+ but he is up and at em, his appetite is fine, using the litter box, very loving, and still loves to sit by the screen door.

Thank you to everyone for all your help. ❤️

Hi Natalie and Tiger, welcome! Are you home testing? 2units is a high starting dose and a jump up to 4 is huge. Come to the Main health forum where more people will see your post. If you have a copy of Tigers bloodwork, post it there so we can see what’s going on with his kidneys and will be better able to help you.

The prescription food is probably to high in carbs. There might be a better choice. Going over to main health forum will get more people to help you figure things out.

Hi all,

Ive tried to post in Main Health, but i get a message saying my post is either spam like or contains something inappropriate? ive tried deleting or rewording a few things, but nothing seems to be working. Help!

Hi and welcome!!

What insulin are you giving him?
What stage of CKD (cronic kidney desease) is he?
How are his phosphorus levels?
Well it would help as they mentioned if you could post his blood test lab results
If you could also post his blood sugar test results you are getting that will also help

Later on maybe you could start using the spreadsheet we use here, I think you will find it very helpful and it gets easier for everyone in the forum to help you this is the link for it http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/
