My Nikko just got diagnosed

Just got the diagnosis tonight that my 7 year old neutered male, Nikko, has diabetes. He's been losing weight and I thought he had hyperthyroid - I've had a couple cats in the past with that. I'm devastated. Will go to vet tomorrow to learn how to give insulin. Is there anything I should be cautious of?
